[h=1]6 Flu-Related Deaths Reported In Collin County[/h]
COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) ? The deadly flu season continues in North Texas. The Collin County Health Department reported six deaths related to the illness this season Thursday.

Officials with the department said the deaths are all adults but haven?t released ages or if they had any prior health issues.

On Wednesday, Dallas County Health and Human Services reported seven flu-related deaths of adults from 51 to 89 years old. This brought the total deaths this flu season to 38.

The two men, in their 90s, had underlying medical conditions, said officials.

8 flu deaths reported in Tarrant County, but the number of cases could be dropping

The flu continues to be widespread across Tarrant County with sick patients filling doctor?s offices and emergency rooms ? yet there may be a glimmer of hope.

Tarrant County Public Health?s chief epidemiologist Russell Jones said the number of people with flu-like illnesses coming to emergency rooms may be dropping.

?I will tell you looking at the preliminary data, the very preliminary ER data, last week looks to be a peak,? Jones said. ?We don?t know if it?s the peak.?is year, the predominant strain is H3N2, which tends to cause more deaths and hospitalizations.

The 40th patient was a 17-year-old resident Dallas. Both patients had high risk health conditions and died after complications from the seasonal flu. Three additional flu deaths were reported Monday in Dallas County, raising the toll from this season to 43 deaths.

The latest patients ranged from age 53 to 93 and lived in Grand Prairie and Dallas, Dallas County Health and Human Services officials reported.


The North Texas death toll from the flu this season now stands at 60. In addition to Dallas County, there have been eight reported deaths in Tarrant County, six in Collin County and three in Denton County.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas ? A 61-year old female is Galveston County?s first flu-related death of the 2017-2018 flu season. The woman, who had pre-existing health conditions, died in mid-January.

This is first flu-associated death of a Galveston County resident reported to GCHD since a child died from flu complications in 2014.

[h=1]Midland Health reports 7 flu-related deaths[/h] Seven people who were inpatients at Midland Memorial Hospital have died since October after testing positive for the flu, according to information provided to the Reporter-Telegram.

Val Sparks, infection preventionist at Midland Health, said the hospital has been following all flu-positive patients and that the deaths were from Oct. 1 through Monday. Those patients were between 68 and 88 years old and had underlying diseases or complications from the virus, according to Sparks.

Flu death toll rises to seven in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Four more people have died of the flu this week, bringing the total number of people who have died as a result of the flu in El Paso to seven.

The Department of Public Health confirmed the deaths Wednesday, saying two men and a woman in their 80's and a woman in her 70's died as a result of flu-related illness. The four people all had underlying medical conditions.

Travis County Flu Deaths Rise To 20
AUSTIN, TX ? The number of fatalities blamed on the flu has risen to 20 ? four times more than the entirety of last season's influenza period with as many as two months left to go this year.

Its most recent report on Jan. 22, Austin Public Health officials said there have been 20 influenza-associated deaths have been reported among Travis County residents, with no pediatric cases among them. The grim milestone was reached against a backdrop of a more forceful flu season nationwide than past seasons, with a particular influenza strain more resistant than in years past.

 Influenza activity is widespread and remains high in Travis County.
 The percentage of specimens positive by rapid antigen tests for influenza reported by hospital and public health
laboratories in Travis County is 37.5% (as of MMWR week 3).
 There have been 19 outbreaks reported among long term care facilities.
 Twenty influenza-associated deaths have been reported among Travis County residents, no influenza-associated
pediatric deaths have been reported.
 As of MMWR week 2, statewide the number of patient visits due to Influenza like Illness (ILI) is around 14% (Figure
2).
 In Texas, A(H3N2) virus is the predominate strain circulating; A(H1N1), and B are co-circulating (Figure 3).
 In addition to flu, other respiratory viruses - especially respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) - were detected in Texas
during epidemiological week 02. No antiviral resistance testing data for Texas specimens are available at this time.
 According to CDC, influenza activity is expected to continue. Over the past 15 flu seasons, this is the first time all the
states in the continental US have reported widespread flu activity.
 PCR testing is performed for specimens referred by area sentinel Influenza surveillance reporters. Providers

Across North Texas, health officials have reported a total of 85 deaths related to the illness as of Monday.
