Flu deaths in El Paso surpass 2009 H1N1 pandemic

More El Pasoans have died from the flu this year than during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, officials said Wednesday.

An elderly man, who died last week and had at least one underlying chronic condition, marked the 18th flu-related death this season, officials of the El Paso Department of Public Health said. The total number of deaths from the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic was 17.

The flu has claimed the lives of five elderly men this season. The other flu-related deaths include one young adult man, three middle-aged women, two elderly women and seven middle-aged men.

So far this season, there have been 3,852 reported flu-related cases, officials said. Last season, El Paso County had about 3,800 flu cases reported with five deaths.
