State health officials have released new figures that show six Rio Grande Valley residents died from the swine flu in June.

The Texas Department of State Health Services released the figures on its website Wednesday.

Identities were not released but the report said a Cameron County woman as well as one man, three women and one boy from Hidalgo County died from the disease in June.

The state figures show that a total of 21 people have died from the swine flu in Texas.

Of those, seven deaths have been reported in the Valley.

Six of those deaths were in June.

The seventh victim was a Mercedes teacher who died from the disease in May.

A baby from Mexico City died in Houston from the disease in April. He and his family had visited Brownsville days earlier.

A total of 4,287 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Texas.

About 35 percent of the confirmed cases and half of the deaths in Texas are from the Valley.

A 3-year-old Dallas County resident who died Thursday morning was infected with the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, Dallas County Health and Human Services officials confirmed.

The child had underlying medical conditions, including neurological and chronic lung disease, officials said.

The department did not release additional identifying information for medical confidentiality and privacy reasons.

The death marks the county’s fourth confirmed swine-flu-related death this season.

Toddler Dies After Contracting Swine Flu

A sixth-grade student at Vernon Price Elementary in Mesquite died at a hospital Sunday. She didn't have any underlying medical conditions, but had also been diagnosed with a bacterial infection and pneumonia.

The first two swine-flu related deaths involved adults who had underlying medical conditions. One was a 52-year-old woman who died on Aug. 27, and the other was a 37-year-old man who died on Sept. 4.

Texas has had four confirmed swine flu deaths of people younger than age 18, Dallas County Health officials said.

During the last flu season, there were 11 pediatric flu deaths in Texas. Out of those deaths, two occurred in Dallas County.

But as of the end of July, 400 cases had been reported in Cameron County, with two deaths attributed to H1N1, while more than 1,300 cases had been reported in Hidalgo County, with 10 deaths attributed to the virus.

Deaths. There have been 13 people with H1N1 who have died in Texas. Two women and a man in Bexar County died in June.
A boy and a woman from Hidalgo County, a man in El Paso County and a woman from Victoria County died in early June.
A man and a woman in El Paso County and a girl from Fort Bend County died in late May. A Cameron County woman and a Nueces County
man died in early May, and a young boy from Mexico City died in a Houston-area hospital in April.

GARLAND (September 15, 2009)--An 11-year-old Garland girl died just days after going home sick from school with the swine flu.

Mesquite sixth grader Cynthia Garcia went home sick Thursday and died Sunday, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The Dallas health department says that the child didn't have an underlying medical condition, but did have pneumonia and a bacterial infection.

Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman, Doug McBride, said
42 Texans have died so far from swine flu.

Not counting Garcia's death, four of those swine flu deaths have been in those less than 18 and at least two had underlying health problems.

He said 11 Texans less than18 have died from seasonal flu since the flu season began last fall.

This was the last list provided by the State DoH. After this report, they began only providing links to weekly surveillance reports that don't report adult deaths. On a couple of occasions, I've call the DoH public relations office and gotton total numbers for the state, but no details.

As of today, my total count is 45.

A University Medical Center patient became the first person in Lubbock County to die of H1N1 flu, vice president for corporate services Greg Bruce confirmed Wednesday morning.

The patient died Monday, Bruce said, adding that hospital privacy laws prevent release of the patient's age and gender and length of stay.

HOUSTON?The Harris County Jail is reporting what is believed to be the first confirmed death of an inmate due to the swine flu.

Jail officials told 11 News Friday that an inmate became ill early this week, and was transported to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment. They say Kenney Beckett, 27, died Thursday night from complications related to swine flu. The official cause of death has not been determined.

FORT WORTH - Five days ago, Fort Worth eight grader Chloe Lindsey came down with a fever. She was diagnosed with the flu Friday and died Sunday.
The 14 year old didn't get Tamiflu at her doctor's visit because she wasn't considered high risk.
Chloe's mother, Tammy Osborne, said it all happened so fast.

here was emotions of sadness and grief in the Flour Bluff School District for the 12-year-old girl who died from complications of the swine flu.

School officials are not telling KRIS 6 News the girl's name, but said she was in the sixth grade at Flour Bluff Intermediate School.

Health officials have confirmed that a fifth person, a 16-year-old, has died from the swine flu in Dallas County.

WFAA-TV reported that the person was a student at Berkner High School in Richardson. A Richardson school district spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment this morning.

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - Tuesday, we learned an East Texas child died at a Dallas hospital in the last 24 hours. He was a 9-year-old boy who went to Jack Elementary in Tyler.

Doctors are not confirming the boy had the H1N1 flu virus, but a doctor with the health district told us there is a 90% chance the child had H1N1. They did confirm it is a pediatric flu related death, and that the child had other underlying diseases.

A University of Texas staff member died of swine flu over the weekend, UT has just announced.

UT officials declined to name the person. Bob Harkins, associate vice president for campus safety and security, said the person was a woman in her 40s who did not work in education but rather ?in one of our service units ? anything from housekeeping to working at counter in some kind of retail operation.?

The woman?s last day at work was Sept. 22, Harkins said.

She was hospitalized at St. David?s Medical Center, but he did not know if she died there. He also did not know whether she lived in Travis County.

Two other people have died in Travis County and 21 have been hospitalized since the outbreak began in April, according to Carole Barasch, spokeswoman for the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department.

Local Woman Dies From Swine Flu

CORPUS CHRISTI - There is another swine flu death in Nueces County.

Late Thursday afternoon, local health officials confirmed that a 45-year-old woman, who died Saturday, was a victim of swine flu.

The woman has only been identified as a health care worker and had been hospitalized since Thursday. She died Saturday night.

The county has now had two swine flu deaths locally in less than a week and it is the sixth swine flu death in Nueces County this year.

Kiwibird - I haven't posted recently on this thread because I've been trying to sort out why I have a total of 54 Texas deaths, which is 8 more than the county-by-county tally you have below. I know that I started with 42 a few weeks ago when that number was released by the state and have counted 12 since then. I might have double counted some. I'll post a summary of where my numbers came from when I figure this out. Thanks for starting this thread. Texas has been one of the most difficult states to keep track of during the pandemic. :tiphat:

The highly publicized (CBS Early Show of 9-30) Cisco, Eastman County, Texas death of the 14 year old teenager on Sunday is not listed officially yet. Probably just a timing issue.

A Lancaster woman who died Friday evening may be the latest Swine Flu casualty in Dallas County.

More than a week ago on Sep. 21, Debra Hatchel realized something was wrong with her daughter, 25 year old Heather Provorse. She had a fever and a cough. Taking no chances, she took her daughter to the hospital.
"I asked the doctor, "I said is this just the regular flu, is this swine flu, or what is this?" said Hatchel. "And he said that he thought it was swine flu because the last few days they'd really been bombarded with a lot of people coming in with the same symptoms that I brought her in with."
Hatchel said doctors sent Heather home with no prescription for Tami-flu.
"I even asked him are you sure she doesn't need it and he told me that he felt that she could go home and take Motrin and Tylenol and cough medicine, and if she did not get better to bring her back," said Hatchel.
Provorse's condition got increasingly worse.
"Her lips were kind of a little bit purple," said Hatchel. "So I immediately called the ambulance."
