HOUSTON – There are over 3,700 coronavirus-related deaths in the state of Texas.

Harris County (including Houston) and Dallas County have the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths.

Texas schools may be allowed to start in-person as late as November, according to the new guidelines issued by the Texas Education Agency announced Friday.
These new guidelines extend the state's original announcement early July that said school districts will be able to delay in-person instruction up to the first three weeks of the academic year.

Dallas County reported 30 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday, a record high number reported in one day.

The deaths include:

A woman in her 40’s who was a resident of the city of Irving. She died in an area hospital emergency department and had underlying high-risk health conditions.
A man in his 50’s who was a resident of the city of Dallas. He had been critically ill in an area hospital and had underlying high-risk health conditions.
A man in his 50’s who was a resident of the city of Dallas. He was found deceased at home and did not have underlying high-risk health conditions.

Texas brothers lose both parents to coronavirus: ‘I didn’t get to say goodbye’

Two Texas brothers lost both of their parents to COVID-19 within two weeks of each other.

Naomi Esquivel, 39, died on July 2 of COVID-19, her mother Rita Marquez-Mendoza told NBC affiliate KWQC-TV.

Two weeks later, Carlos Garcia, 44, died of the same respiratory illness. He’d attended his wife of 24 years’ funeral, but succumbed to kidney failure at the hospital on July 17.

Why Texas COVID-19 death numbers jumped on July 27
The state's health department changed the way it reports coronavirus death totals.

HOUSTON — On Monday, July 27, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced that moving forward, it was changing the way it reports deaths related to COVID-19.

Previously, DSHS reported deaths after they were reported publicly by local and regional health departments. The old method caused a delay in reporting as well as confusion over when deaths actually happened.

Moving forward, DSHS will identify coronavirus deaths through the cause of death listed on death certificates. Using death certificates will ensure consistent reporting across the state. It will also provide the public with more accurate information about when the deaths actually happened. Death certificates have to be filed within 10 days.
