. THE SECRETARIAT OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT, IN COORDINATION WITH SENASICA, MAINTAINS SURVEILLANCE AND IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO ADDRESS REPORTS OF SCREWWORM IN ANIMALS IN YUCATAN, GUARANTEEING TREATMENT WITHOUT SLAUGHTER OR QUARANTINE.
The Ministry of Rural Development (Seder) reported 82 new cases of cattle screwworm in Yucatán, bringing the total to 212 confirmed cases, all of which have been cured.
Tzucacab, Tekal de Venegas, Teya, Izamal, Huhi, Maxcanu, Dzilam Gonzalez, Cenotillo, and Mérida reported two cases in each municipality, in cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs, ranging in age from six days old to six years old. These animals presented wounds mainly from barbed wire and bat bites on body parts such as the cervical region, head, udder, thigh, vulva, ear, hock, and navel.
Meanwhile, Calotmul, Temozón, Halachó, Peto, Buctzotz, Cansahcab, and Espita identified three cases each, in cattle, pigs, dogs, and horses between six days old and nine years old, injured by branding, goring, fighting, being tagged with a band, barbed wire, papillomatosis, and bat bites.
In Tekax, four cases were reported in cattle, whose ages ranged from 15 days old to eight years old; they presented injuries to the navel, horn, and vulva.
Tizimin documented nine cases in cattle, horses, and pigs, with injuries to the forearm, navel, interscapular region, cervical region, horn, and udder. Their ages ranged from eight days old to 20 years old.
Meanwhile, Panabá and Tunkás reported eight cases each, in cattle aged between five days old and seven years, with injuries to the navel, thorax, horn, vulva, and ear.
In the municipalities of Hocabá, Tixkokob, Muna, Ticul, Dzoncauich, Sucilá, Oxkutzcab, Opichén, Kopomá, Chapab, Baca, Cantamayec, Xocchel, and Kantunil, there was one case each, in dogs, sheep, pigs, and cattle aged five days old to 10 years, with injuries to the navel and udder.
The cases by species are distributed as follows: 176 cattle, 14 dogs, 4 horses, 5 sheep, 11 pigs, and two goats.
The Department of Agriculture (SEDER) and the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica) are working together to effectively address citizen reports of the presence of the pest in animals of different species.
