Avian flu hits Shelby County poultry flock, first Texas case this year

SHELBY COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - State and federal animal health officials have confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial poultry flock in Shelby County, marking the first confirmed case in a Texas commercial facility this year.

The Texas Animal Health Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal, along with the Plant Health Inspection Service, said samples from the flock were submitted to the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. It was later confirmed that on Dec. 11, 2025, significant bird deaths were reported.​

Big Broiler Farm Hit by HPAI in Texas

The outbreak was the first to hit a commercial poultry facility in Texas since 2024. The loss of broilers was the first nationwide since the H5N1 virus hit two smaller commercial flocks in mid-November in LaGrange County, Ind., with a combined nearly 34,000 birds. The only other broiler farm hit during the autumn surge of HPAI — which has been worse for the turkey and duck industries — was in October in Gordon County, Ga., with 139,000 chickens.

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) said the Shelby County outbreak was discovered after “considerable mortality” in the flock.
