Tarrant County has already had 302 cases of pertussis this year, compared to 162 cases in 2012. Dallas County reports 114 cases so far in 2013, including the death of a three-week-old infant in June.

The numbers are the highest North Texas has seen in nearly a decade, prompting a health advisory to all Dallas County medical providers...

From City of Lubbock:

The City of Lubbock Health Department would like to notify citizens and clinicians of an increase in pertussis cases this summer across the state. Since January, the City of Lubbock Health Department has confirmed twelve cases with nine of the twelve being reported since July 22. The Health Department is working on additional reports that have been received but not yet confirmed. There were ten total reported cases of pertussis for the City of Lubbock in 2012...

More Than 2,000 Whooping Cough Cases Confirmed In Texas

Tarrant County health officials are reporting "record numbers" of whooping cough cases and hospitalizations this year, especially among Hispanic infants.

The count had reached 104 whooping cough or pertussis cases as of Oct. 1, said Dr. Sandra Parker, medical director for the Tarrant County Public Health Department. Of those cases, 37 were hospitalized.

"We are also seeing high numbers of infant pertussis cases among the Hispanic population," she said...

With just 12 weeks left in 2013, an e-mail today from Chris Van Dusen of the Texas Department of State Health Services reveals Texas has seen 2,652 whooping cough, or pertussis, cases this year. The epidemic continues to be centered in the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex, where 42.5 percent of all cases have been reported. Tarrant County has 519 cases and is one of just seven counties in the state with over 100 reported cases.

Analysis of available data suggests that if the rate of increase in pertussis cases continues, Texas will close 2013 with about 4,100 whooping cough reports. That would be the highest number of cases in Texas since the 1950s, when the vaccine to prevent pertussis was introduced widely. The previous record was in 2009, when the state registered 3,358 pertussis cases...

Cameron County now has 61 reported cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, so far this year, health officials said Tuesday.

Only 22 cases were reported in the county during all of last year...

...Reported cases are also up statewide: 2,652 as of Oct. 7, compared to 1,906 for all of last year, the state health department reports.

Six of last year?s Texas cases resulted in deaths. Two of this year?s cases in Texas have resulted in deaths, both infants too young to be vaccinated, the state health department said.

Whooping Cough Cases Up In Texas, 3 Other States

NEW ORLEANS (October 29, 2013) Nearly 2,900 whopping cough cases have been reported in Texas so far this year and things are about as bad in three neighboring states, health officials say.

The number of cases in Louisiana has set a post-1960s record.

In Arkansas, the number is double what it was a year ago.

And cases are also up in Oklahoma...

The Texas Department of State Health Services released the latest data on the pertussis epidemic in that state on Nov. 4. A total of 2,996 whooping cough cases have been reported in Texas in 2013. The number of new cases since the last report dropped to 122. There have been three deaths associated with the contagious respiratory illness outbreak and 12.2 percent of all patients have required hospitalization...

The modern record for whooping cough cases in Texas was set in 2009, when the state saw 3,358 cases...

The numbers in Tarrant County are even higher ? at close to 600.

CORPUS CHRISTI ? Health authorities reported Nueces County?s first pertussis death this year Wednesday afternoon, hours after holding a news conference to emphasize the importance of vaccination to curb the spread of the resurging illness.

The baby?s death may represent the first of a Nueces County resident from pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in at least a decade.

Health officials are going through their files and checking with the Texas Department of State Health Services, but late Wednesday had not found a record of a Nueces County death due to pertussis in the last 10 years, she said.

The fatality marks the fourth in Texas this year blamed on whooping cough, and it illustrates the potentially lethal consequences for children.

As of Dec. 16, 2013, Texas has reported 3,482 Pertussis cases to the CDC for 2013 and has reported three deaths due to Pertussis. Texas has not seen case numbers this high since 1959...
