Week 7: Widespread 2 new deaths; total 6 Two influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported recently and both occurred during week 5. The first death occurred in a 5-month-old with an underlying medical condition. A specimen collected from the child was positive for influenza A (H3N2) by PCR test. Group A Streptococcus and Klebsiella oxytoca were also isolated from the child?s blood. The child was not vaccinated for influenza. The second death occurred in an 8-month-old with an underlying medical condition. The child?s rapid influenza test was positive for influenza A (not subtyped). Five influenza-associated pediatric fatalities have been reported in Texas since the beginning of the 2010-2011 influenza season. Four deaths have been reported during calendar year 2011. There has been 1 death reported in pregnant or postpartum woman since the beginning of the summer 2010. NOTE: Only two were reported this week. The additional one was missed in week 3, so it's added in now.
