As part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s detailed contact trace investigation conducted in response to the first Ebola case in Dallas, it was discovered that an employee of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital had departed the United States via a commercial cruise ship on October 12 from Galveston, Texas. The employee did not have direct contact with the since deceased Ebola patient, but may have had contact with clinical specimens collected from him. The individual was out of the country before being notified of CDC?s updated requirements for active monitoring. At the time the hospital employee left the country, CDC was requiring only self-monitoring.

The employee has been self-monitoring, including daily temperature checks, since October 6, and has not had a fever or demonstrated any symptoms of illness. It has been 19 days since the passenger may have processed the since deceased patient?s fluid samples. The cruise line has actively supported CDC?s efforts to speak with the individual, whom the cruise ship?s medical doctor has monitored and confirmed was in good health. Following this examination, the hospital employee and traveling partner have voluntarily remained isolated in a cabin. We are working with the cruise line to safely bring them back to the United States out of an abundance of caution.

Mexico fails to grant access to cruise ship carrying Texas health worker

The cruise ship carrying a Texas health-care worker who ?may have? handled lab specimens from Dallas Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan is headed back to the United States after Mexican authorities failed to grant permission for the ship to dock off the coast of Cozumel, according to a Carnival spokeswoman.

The Carnival Magic had been waiting off the Mexican coast since Friday morning for its scheduled port visit. Mexican authorities still hadn?t given clearance by noon, so the ship continued to its home port of Galveston, Tex., where it was due back on Sunday, according to Carnival.

The health worker, a lab supervisor who has not been named, has shown no symptoms of the disease but remains on board and in voluntary isolation, according to Carnival.

Updated statement from Carnival Cruise Lines Oct. 17, 2014 ? 12.30pm U.S. eastern time

The Carnival Magic, which was waiting off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico this morning to dock there for a scheduled port visit, had not received clearance from Mexican authorities to do so by 12 noon eastern time today and therefore the decision was made to proceed to Galveston to ensure the ship arrives there on time on Sunday morning. We greatly regret that this situation, which was completely beyond our control, precluded the ship from making its scheduled visit to Cozumel and the resulting disappointment it has caused our guests. The Texas healthcare worker on board continues to show no symptoms of illness and poses no risk to the guests or crew on board. The individual remains in voluntary isolation. Guests on the ship are being provided a $200 per person credit to their shipboard accounts and a 50 percent discount on a future cruise based on the missed visit to Cozumel.

6:00 am Statement:

Late afternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 15., we were made aware by the U.S. CDC of a guest sailing this week on board Carnival Magic who is a lab supervisor at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. At no point in time has the individual exhibited any symptoms or signs of infection and it has been 19 days since she was in the lab with the testing samples. She is deemed by CDC to be very low risk. At this time, the guest remains in isolation on board the ship and is not deemed to be a risk to any guests or crew. It is important to reiterate that the individual has no symptoms and has been isolated in an extreme abundance of caution. We are in close contact with the CDC and at this time it has been determined that the appropriate course of action is to simply keep the guest in isolation on board.

None of Carnival Cruise Lines? ships visit the region where Ebola cases are originating nor do our ships call in any countries with Level 3 CDC Travel Heath Notices. Any passengers or crew who have visited or traveled through Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea within 21 days of a cruise departure date will be denied boarding. Additionally, all guests sailing with us must answer a series of health screening questions during embarkation and, if deemed necessary, will be asked to submit to further medical screening prior to being allowed to board. All cruise lines continue to monitor the situation closely, along with our colleagues in the rest of the travel industry. The cruise industry is in close, frequent contact with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for updates and guidance.

Carnival Magic is based year-round in Galveston, TX and operates seven-day cruises to the Caribbean. The ship departed Galveston on Sunday, Oct. 12 and will return on Sunday, Oct. 19.

A helicopter landed aboard a cruise ship Saturday to pick up a blood sample from a passenger who may have handled fluids from an Ebola patient, ahead of the Carnival Magic?s planned docking at Galveston, Texas, Sunday.

Carnival said Texas health officials requested that a sample be taken from the passenger and tested, but that the ship is still scheduled to arrive Sunday morning. The company said of the passenger, who is in quarantine, that ?she?s feeling absolutely fine.?

It's good they are checking now before returning to home port. But, what if she tests positive? Will they just tell 4,000+ people to return home and self-monitor?

Coast Guard: Woman aboard cruise ship showing no Ebola symptoms

The Coast Guard confirmed Saturday that one of its helicopters flew to the ship and received samples from health care workers. The helicopter is flying back to Ellington Airport in Houston, where samples will be taken and transported to Austin to be tested for Ebola.

The woman, who has not been named, is showing no signs of the virus and is considered asymptomatic, according to Coast Guard officials. She has been placed in isolation on the ship.

"We anticipate the results of the test will indicate she is not showing any symptoms and the test would be negative," Coast Guard officials said.

The possibility that this person has Ebola is vanishingly small. Lab workers use universal precautions when handling samples, that is, they assume every vial of blood is infectious. I know that the hospital & CDC are very concerned because they don't know exactly where the system failed, but honestly, this is bordering on ridiculous. On the one hand, the authorities are telling people not to panic, and on the other hand they are sending a Coast Guard helicopter out to pick up a blood sample from a lab supervisor. If there is hysteria in this country, it's because the actions are not matching the words. They say don't panic, and then they panic.

Or else there is something that the CDC is not telling us about the transmissibility of Ebola.

It's one or the other, they really do need to decide which it is.

Just like monitoring 800 people from two planes, even though you can't catch Ebola just by sitting next to someone, and it's not airborne. The President says the citizenry needs to fight the hysteria and fear, while the CDC is feeding the hysteria and fear. It's just crazy.

I agree.
Are they making the statements about monitoring all these people just to reassure us that they are doing something proactive? Or does the level of contact experienced in these public travel incidents actually pose more risk than the sound bite 'don't panic' statements acknowledge?
