The Centre for Disease Control says the Northern Territory has had its first fatal case of swine flu this year.
An elderly man died from the illness in hospital yesterday.
There have been 173 cases of swine flu in the Territory this year, with 45 cases confirmed in the past week.
The centre's acting director Peter Markey says it is the peak of the flu season and people need to take precautions.
"We had our first death yesterday for the flu season," he said.
"An elderly man with other contributing medical problems passed away so that's sad news.
"But nevertheless a reminder that flu is a serious illness and we need to do what we can to prevent its spread."
