The Shelby County Health Department has identified 4 Norovirus outbreaks in the county so far this year.

"Well this is the season that we commonly see outbreaks of Norovirus," stated Helen Morrow with the Shelby County Health Department. "The problem we run into are people that may become dehydrated and there are some deaths associated with it every year usually the very young and the very old."

They aren't saying where the outbreaks occurred...

Norovirus can live for weeks on hard surfaces, even upholstered surfaces. Most sanitizers can't kill it. It's more contagious than the flu, and there's no vaccine.

A quick-spreading norovirus that sickened dozens of people in the Greenbrier area has been linked to food, according to Deputy State Epidemiologist John Dunn.

Dunn confirmed that a Greenbrier restaurant was the likely source of the virus, but he stopped short of naming it.

?There was one food source that was common among a lot of the cases,? he said. ?Because the food was involved, that?s why more people became ill.?
...
?In this case, we may never know if it was the bread, or the lettuce, or the pickle or the mayonnaise,? Dunn said. ?Norovirus is typically a person-to-person illness. So, if a particular item was contaminated, it came from a person; either someone who prepared the sandwiches or the food that arrived at the establishment. That?s something we will likely never determine.?
...
Dunn said the health department?s investigation of the August norovirus cases to hit the Greenbrier stands at 146.
