THANJAVUR: Though there is no incidence of chikungunya fever in the district, steps are being taken to prevent an outbreak in the district, said the Collector, C. Vijayaraj Kumar, here on Tuesday.

The Collector launched an exercise to spray temiphos solution to eradicate larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that spread the chickungunya virus.

He himself sprayed the solution on stagnated water at Melavasthathchavadi village in Pillaiyarpatti panchayat near here. He said that the exercise would be carried out for the next 42 days in all parts of the district.

The Collector said that there was no danger to life because of chikungunya. But it will result in fever and pain in joints.

He urged the panchayat presidents, councillors and members of self-help groups to create an awareness among the people of measures to prevent the disease like keeping the surroundings clean.

Prevention was better than cure, he said.
