GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Tiphani Corely, 19, was once an energetic, vibrant woman. Now, she is fighting for her life as the H1N1 virus, or Swine flu, ravages her body. Doctors said the prognosis is not good.

Corely graduated from Rockledge High in May of 2008. She had plans of going to cosmetology school. Then, on July 4 of this year, her family rushed her to the hospital. She has been under medical care ever since and is currently at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

"She got off ECMO [Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation] about three days ago. She was off for about 24 hours, doing good and everything, and all of a sudden she crashed and went flat line, and they were able to get her back and back on ECMO," said Brenda Farrish, Corel'ys aunt.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a form of long-term heart-lung bypass, which Farrish said helps her niece breathe.

Tiphani's lungs collapsed, and as a result, she is also on a ventilator with three chest tubes to keep air and fluids out of her lungs. In addition, she is having liver, kidney and heart problems.

"When we first got to Shands on July 9th, they said it was a fifty-fifty chance," said Farrish. "They said its under 50 percent now."

Tiphani's mom quit her job. She moved to Gainesville. Her dad is now working extra shifts to make ends meet.

"I know it's several thousand dollars a day to run that ECMO machine. I mean, I cant quote how much it is, but the medical bills are rising, along with their personal bills," said Farrish.

"She is fighting, and my brother and his wife are just praying for a miracle."

A fundraiser raffle for Corley will be held on Friday, August 7 at the County Line Saloon at 4650 West New Haven Avenue in Melbourne. Donations will also accepted at the Kennedy Space Center Federal Credit Union.
