Teenager in Kerala dies from rare infection caused by brain-eating Amoebae

A 15-year-old boy from Alappuzha district in Kerala has tragically succumbed to a rare brain infection caused by free-living amoebae found in contaminated waters, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George.
The boy, a resident of Panavalli, was diagnosed with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a disease caused by these amoebae. This infection is extremely rare, with only five cases reported in the state thus far.
Minister George confirmed that the first case was reported in Alappuzha's Thirumala ward in 2016. Two cases were subsequently confirmed in Malappuram in 2019 and 2020, with one each in Kozhikode and Thrissur in 2020 and 2022, respectively...
