Background

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic emerged even though seasonal H1N1 viruses have circulated for decades. Epidemiological evidence suggested that the current seasonal vaccine did not offer significant protection from the novel pandemic, and that people over the age of 50 might were less susceptible to infection.

Objectives

In a mouse challenge study with the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus, we evaluated protective immune responses elicited by prior infection with human and swine influenza A viruses.

Results

Mice infected with A/Mexico/4108/2009 (Mex09) showed significant weight loss and 40% mortality. Prior infection with a 1976 classical swine H1N1 virus resulted in complete protection from Mex09 challenge. Prior infection with either a 2009 or a 1940 seasonal H1N1 influenza virus provided partial protection and a >100-fold reduction in viral lung titers at day 4 post-infection.

Conclusions

These findings indicate that in experimental animals recently induced immunity to 1918-derived H1N1 seasonal influenza viruses, and to a 1976 swine influenza virus, afford a degree of protection against the 2009 pandemic virus. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of accumulating data suggesting partial protection of older persons during the 2009 pandemic.

It gives a big slap for those people trying to predict the pandemic, how many watts they have consumed to plot the phylogenetic diagrams and those playing with the codon bias analysis, they should really try to admit the truth and the ecology of virus is not that easy to be calculated.

What really telling the truth is the antigenicity and more statistically, the serology. I believe the pandemic flu stain was not pop out just in a coincident, but our detection system is just far away sensitive, or too low resolution to resolve the origin the gene constellation of the H1N1, instead, clinically, they just tested for +/- and kept in the freezer, able to tell flu A/ flu B and subtyping them is already their heaven. They may randomly pick few to sequence over 10 thousands of sample each year. And certainly the current pandemic flu stain was missed out that 10 thousands.

But all these years we are selling the H2, H5, H7 or even H9 as the pandemic candidates, we all know the result and kept silence when the H1N1 won the game.

My teacher said this right before the pandemic and it keeps reminding me over the last 6 months, " As a pandemic virus, it doesn't has to be highly pathogenic, instead of, highly transmissible." :applause:

Could it be realy that after a year of wondering about the chimera pandemic virus,
for which months were needed to fabricate an vaccine prototype,
it could be ousted by a 1976 vaccine,
or could it be enaugh to partialy protect by the H1N1 strain seasonal vaccine?!?


That seems to be hard to believe - the same #1 study equipe obviously tried all the viral matching from the begining of the pandemic,
so why now the results are diferent?
Or they aren't diferent, but were concealed?

Stil, the younger folks much more infecting, gain doubts in the same direction.


Medical researchers and estabs previous blindness, shock theory,
enlightenings a posterior,
or a study with an result hard to swallow as "gold"?
