Tanzania: Five Die As Meningitis Hits Rukwa Region

Sumbawanga ? FIVE people have died following the outbreak of meningitis while 15 others are undergoing in-patient treatment at the Rukwa Regional Hospital here, it has been learnt.

Sumbawanga Municipal Medical Officer Dr Ally Mussa Makori revealed to reporters that the outbreak of the disease was first reported on September 7, this year, and until Monday, five people, three of them males, have died while undergoing treatment at the regional health facility.

The outbreak of the airborne disease was reported to have hit at Chanji, Izia, Old Sumbawanga, Kantalamba, Malangali and Mazwi wards in this municipality as well as at Muze ward in Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District...

Rukwa region contains meningitis outbreak

A meningitis outbreak in Rukwa region has been contained with 32 cases of hospitalisation, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said yesterday.

Dr Neema Rusibamayila, assistant director for preventive services in the Reproductive and Child Health division at the ministry, said in an interview that seven people had died by yesterday, with six patients still undergoing treatment at the regional hospital.

The outbreak of the disease was first reported on September 7 at Rukwa Regional Hospital where five people died and 15 others were hospitalised...
