HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- The ground opened up near a Tampa apartment building and swallowed a car. The black car was left nose down in the large sinkhole Sunday.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials estimate the sinkhole measures about 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep.

Sandy Burnam was sitting on her back patio when she heard a loud thump.

When she ran outside, she couldn't believe her eyes.

"It?s surreal. You don't see your car nose down, trunk up in a hole. It looked like some one picked it up and it was that fast,? she said.

A total of 11 apartments had to be evacuated because of the sinkhole. Code enforcement officials said they don't know when it will be safe for residents to return.

MyFoxTampaBay.com staff report

TAMPA - A big sinkhole has already emptied a condo building, swallowing up a car in the parking lot and forcing 11 residents to leave, and it appears to be getting larger.

Hillsborough County code compliance officers say the hole has grown since it opened up early Sunday morning at the Bordeaux Village condominiums on North 50th Street. They also believe the Toyota Camry that fell in has slipped even further.

Inspectors estimate the hole to be 22 to 25 feet wide and at least 17 feet deep.

A dozen units are in the building that was damaged, and engineers are checking to see if any significant damage has occurred to the structure itself. Those who were evacuated are not being allowed any where near the building until the sinkhole is filled in.

So far, the sinkhole has not affected any of the other buildings in the complex. Officers have warned residents of the neighborhood behind the complex to keep an eye out.
