"On 5 October 1918, the Tampa Tribune noted it's first "honest-to-gracious" case of Spanish influenza...By the end of October 1918, 2,712 Floridians had died of the illness...many more would die of pneumonia...
cigar factories served as perfect vectors for the disease... one-half of cigar makers fell ill ...Tampa mayor fell victim to the flu as did Tampa fire chief...
the flu rattled the very foundations of society...streetcars posted "no spitting" signs...life insurance companies went bankrupt...disease hit the Latino neighborhoods especially hard..."
