Medical teams rush to village following man's death

Udhagamandalam/Coimbatore, Jul 26 (PTI) Medical teams have rushed to a village near Pandalur, about 100 KM from Udhagamandalam, following reports of a 30-year-old man's death due to suspected symptoms of plague.

Health department sources said the man had gone to his wife's place in Sulthan Bathery in Kerala and returned two days ago, with fever.He was then admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode in the neighbouring state.

Nice find, RoRo. One to keep an eye on. While a large plague outbreak was reported from Surat in 1994, plague is not considered endemic to India, and cases are not commonly reported.

I have to wonder whether some other disease is being mistaken for plague here, whether this man had an unusual exposure, or whether the word "plague" is being used to mean "outbreak" or "illness" and not actually Y. pestis infection.

My thoughts were along the lines of plague = rat fever = leptospirosis.
