State organises conference on H1N1 for doctors
TNN, Jul 8, 2010, 11.31pm IST

CHENNAI: With A (H1N1) being diagnosed and treated by several private hospitals, the health department has invited doctors to check if there is a relative increase or virulence in the virus that has resurged. The King Institute of Preventive Medicine has organised a meeting on July 11 when at least 300-city based doctors will attend to discuss the resurgence of the pandemic.

"Earlier it was easy to monitor the disease because diagnosis and treatment was done at the government hospitals and testing centers. Now, the number of patients who come to the government hospitals are not huge. We need to know if doctors are seeing a more virulent form of the disease to check for mutations. We also need to see if there is any drug resistance. For this we need to create a platform for constant updates. This platform will help us create one," said Dr P Gunasekaran, deputy director of King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research.

The meeting will be held in association with the International Association of Medical & Pharmaceutical Virologists (IAMPV) and will be inaugurated by health secretary VK Subburaj. Speakers including WHO consultant Dr. Deepak Gadkari, director of public health Dr R T Porkai Pandian, peadiatrician Dr A. Parthasarathy and MMC director of clinical medicine Dr C Rajendran will speak on the evolution of influenza and overview of surveillance and resurgence of H1N1 and Lab diagnosis of H1N1.

Following the discussions on patients case studies, the state will prepare a guideline for experts on vaccinations and planning statergies. "Presently we have at least four vaccines in the market. Doctors will be updated on advantages and disadvantages of each vaccine including cost and efficiency," said Dr Gunasekaran.
