Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said that when the AIADMK was in power, the Union Health Ministry had sent four circulars asking the Government to take steps to prevent the outbreak of chikungunya.
But the AIADMK government did not take any action.
Campaigning for the Democratic Progressive Alliance candidates in the local body polls here on Sunday, the Minister said AIADMK leader Jayalalitha was indulging in negative campaign while referring to the chikungunya issue.
DHARMAPURI: Though Dharmapuri district is said to be free from chikungunya, symptoms of dengue have been reported in a few places in the rural pockets due to the continuous arrival of people who temporarily migrated from the district to the North for work.
According to sources, around one lakh people have returned to Dharmapuri from Bangalore, Mysore and Maharashtra, where they had been working for daily wages, to exercise their franchise in the local body elections as well as celebrate Deepavali with their kith and kin here.
The health condition of the rural folk is expected to deteriorate due to the sudden and continuous arrival of these migrants from the chikungunya and dengue-hit States.
A few suspected cases of continuous fever were reported in several villages like Nallampalli, Pennagaram, Harur, etc, in the last three days, said sources in the Development Sector.
When contacted, Deputy Director of Health Services N Iyyanar said no cases of chikungunya had been reported in the district after July due to the ?Source Reduction Campaign? effectively undertaken by the district administration and the Health Department through the designated 1,685 groups, including the Dharmapuri municipality.
In addition, ?Anti-Lacal Work? (dropping of Abate Stock Solution campaign ) had also been carried out from September 5 to October 9 by covering 8 panchayat unions.
All the 33 PHCs (Primary Health Centres) and 218 HSCs were directed to take care of the patients with complaints of fever.
There is a chance for chikungunya and dengue due to the continuous influx of migrants from the North to the district.
People should extend their cooperation in preventing the spread of such diseases by continuing the ongoing ?Source Reduction Campaign Methods? in their places, the Deputy Director of Health Services appealed.
At the Dharmapuri Headquarters Hospital, around 350 persons with complaints of fever were treated as outpatients on Monday alone.
