Swine flu strikes Tiruchy after a year as 51-year-old woman dies in hospital


TIRUCHY: Swine flu has again showed up in the city after nearly a year as a 51-year-old woman died of H1N1 viral infection despite treatment in a private hospital, on Thursday. According to sources,
K Umayavalli, a resident of Karumandapam, was admitted to a private hospital in Tiruchy after her health started suddenly deteriorating. As there was no improvement in her condition, medical tests were conducted. The test reports revealed she was affected by the H1N1 virus. Later, she was taken to another private hospital for further treatment. However, she succumbed to the infection.

Twenty-five new cases and one death has been reported in last two months, while a large number of patients required intensive care due to the disease.

Chennai: The predictions of flu-trackers indicating a high incidence of seasonal flu in Tamil Nadu are coming true as the state is witnessing an increase in the number of cases.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed more than 65 cases and two deaths up to April 24 this year as per the recent data released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Chennai: Cases of Swine flu are once again making the rounds in the State, but top officials have said that public need not worry about the communicable disease.

According to data from Union Health Ministry, 65 cases and two deaths have been recorded already. However, officials have asked people not to panic as several precautionary measures have been laid out.

Coimbatore: Jamaluddin, 42, succumbed to flu without responding to the treatment at a private hospital in Erode district, on Saturday night. Police said, few days ago Jamaluddin, underwent a heart operation in the private hospital in Erode district and recently he developed a respiratory problem.

?Two days ago, as he developed severe breathlessness, his family members again brought him to the same hospital, in Erode district for an examination. They believed he would have developed complications in the heart. A diagnosis of blood and urine samples revealed that Jamaluddin was affected by swine flu,? police said.

Two persons from the Nilgiris have died of swine flu in the past 10 days.

On Monday, Abdul Rahman, 43, a deputy tahsildar working with the Nilgiris district administration, died at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) after contracting the H1N1 virus.

Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. S. Porkudi, Deputy Director of Health Services, Nilgiris district, said that 10 days ago, a 60-year-old woman from Melur in Coonoor died from congestive cardiac failure. ?After running tests, it became clear that she had contracted swine flu,? Dr. Porkudi said.

MADURAI / NAGERCOIL: Two women died while six others were admitted with symptoms of swine flu. Meenakshi, a middle-aged woman who had tested positive for Swine Flu (H1N1), succumbed to the infection on Friday, while Veerammal (70), who was being treated at the special ward in Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), died on Saturday night.

Confirming the deaths, the dean of Madurai Medical College, D Maruthupandian, said Veerammal was treated in the special ward but that she had tested negative for H1N1.

Sivaganga: Two men succumbed to suspected swine flu at a private hospital in Karaikudi in Sivaganga on Tuesday. Manoharan, 45, of Ramanathapuram district was admitted to the private hospital with high fever and breathing problems on Tuesday morning However, he succumbed in the evening. Augustine Rathinam, 70, of Karaikudi who was admitted to the hospital on Sunday also succumbed on Tuesday.

Coimbatore: Mahendran from Somandurai Sithur, in Pollachi, was down with severe fever for the past ten days. He thought it to be a normal cold and abstained from taking any treatment. However, his condition worsened critically and was taken to Pollachi Government Hospital by family members.

VELLORE: A 43-year-old man from Gudiyattam in Vellore died of swine flu, at a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday evening. The deceased, Ramamoorthy G (43), was admitted to Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore on October 12, following severe fever. Since his condition did not improve, he was shifted to a private hospital in Chennai.

Later, Ramamoorthy was tested positive for swine flu, and died at the hospital on Saturday.

N Sanjay, hailing from Samathur in nearby Pollachi, was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago for suspected dengue fever, but later doctors diagnosed him to be suffering from the H1N1 influenza.
He died Tuesday afternoon without responding to treatment, the sources said.

Two other patients were undergoing treatment for dengue, four for swine flu and 12 with symptoms of the flu while and 61 people were being treated for viral fever, they said.

A 52-year-old advocate, who was undergoing treatment at Kanniyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Asaripallam here for swine flu, died in the early hours of Tuesday.

After a sudden surge in swine flu cases in the district, 29 persons with H1N1 viral infection were admitted to the hospital, and 15 of them were discharged after they were cured of the infection.

Advocate Ravichandran of Thengampudhur, who was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition on Wednesday last after undergoing treatment at a private hospital for seven days, died around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

MADURAI: A 44-year-old man from Sundararajanpatti in Madurai died of swine flu at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on Thursday morning, taking the swine flu death toll at the hospital to five.

The hospital said, Mandiramoorthi (44) from Sundararajanpatti was admitted at the quarantine swine flu ward at GRH on Wednesday and was later tested positive for H1N1 virus.

After developing complications during treatment, he breathed his last on Thursday morning, raising the swine flu death toll at the hospital to five.

TIRUNELVELI: Swine flu death toll touched three in the district as two more persons succumbed to the deadly virus at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) on Friday.

According to SM Kannan, Dean of TVMCH, the deceased were identified as Muthukrishnan (70) from Muneerpallam and Selvam (30) from Samathanapuram. The official said five swine flu patients and three dengue patients, including two children, were undergoing treatment at TVMCH.
