[h=1]Two persons die of A(H1N1) in Coimbatore[/h] Two persons died of A (H1N1) influenza at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Friday night. CMCH authorities said that the patients were suffering from other illnesses when they were brought to the hospital. They said that pneumonitis, inflammation of lung tissue, was the cause of death in both cases.
In the first case, a 36-year-old woman from Ramanathapuram died soon after her admission at CMCH on Friday. The woman, who also had symptoms of A (H1N1) influenza, was declared dead hours after her admission.

In the second case, a 54-year-old man from Sowripalayam died at CMCH due to pneumonitis. Relatives of the deceased created tension at CMCH alleging that hospital authorities had diagnosed the man with cardiac ailments at the time of admission and later termed pneumonitis as reason for death. Though a new case of A (H1N1) influenza was reported at CMCH, authorities refused to give exact number of patients treated.

COIMBATORE: One more H1N1 death was reported from Nachipalayam near Eachanari here earlier this week. A daily wage labourer, D Mallika, 48, died in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Her husband and daily wage labourer, M Dhandapani, 58, had died of the H1N1 virus lst week.


The couple had fever and cough and received treatment in a private hospital. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to CMCH. Dhandapani died while being brought to the hospital.

In the seven-odd weeks this year, as many as 1,020 persons in Tamil Nadu have tested positive for H1N1 (swine flu) and nine have succumbed. In contrast, 2016 saw only 122 cases and two deaths, while in 2015, when the virus peaked, the State recorded a total of 898 cases and 29 deaths, according to the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH).

A 78-year-old man from Palani in Dindugal district passed away in the wee hours of Monday at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).The patient was referred here from a private hospital in Papanaikanpalayam on Sunday. He had co-morbid conditions of diabetes and coronary heart disease. He tested positive for H1N1. A 47-year-old man from PN Pudur, suspected to be H1N1 positive, too died within two hours of his admission in CMCH. He died due to Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome and respiratory failure due to pneumonia in both his lungs. He was referred from a private hospital, where he was treated for 10 days.
Another 35-year-old man from Chinnametupalayam near Saravanampatti died at a private hospital in Pappanaickenpalayam on Sunday night. According to the hospital, the man died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome. As of Monday evening, there were 29 patients at CMCH admitted for H1N1 infection. Of them, 21 patients are from Coimbatore, five from Tirupur, two from Erode and one from Namakkal. Of them, 20 are women. The youngest of the patients is aged 13. The hospital has also recorded three dengue cases and 65 fever cases. ?Many people approach private hospitals and clinics. Though doctors there know how to treat, they take time to diagnose the disease. But the time lost can cost patients their lives,? said a senior doctor in the CMCH.

BENGALURU: A day after the health officials confirmed the death of the first person in Bengaluru due to H1N1 this season, reports of two more persons succumbing to H1N1 in the city came on Tuesday.
All the three areas from which deaths have been reported — Marathahalli, Thubarahalli and Whitefield — fall in the same stretch. However, a senior health official termed it a mere coincidence. Janaki (29) from Hosur in Tamil Nadu died of H1N1 on February 4 in Sanjaynagar, Marathahalli here. 36-year-old Vidya, a resident of Whitefield, died a day later on February 5. Janaki had come to her mother’s house here. Her husband is a driver and had come to Marathahalli a day before her admission to Manipal hospital here on January 29. She was admitted for typhoid.

Denying that the patient, Shanmugasundaram, died due to swine-flu, doctors, requesting anonymity, said that the patient was admitted to Apollo Speciality Hospitals here a few days ago and subsequently referred to the GRH on February 20, where he died.
When reporters asked for diagnosis and reports, the doctors said that the patient was admitted for viral fever.
Another doctor said that the blood test samples had been sent to Hyderabad.
However, they admitted in private that the patient had died due to swine-flu. The Dean was not available for comment.

"As the H1N1 ward is full, many patients are shifted to the fever wards and a room near the ICU," said a doctor. "Only three of 34 are tested positive for the virus," they said.Earlier this week, the number of patients undergoing treatment for H1N1 in the CMCH had touched 39, forcing it to move some patients to the fever ward or a step down intensive care unit. "The figure is inclusive of all patients being treated for the flu in all wards," said resident medical officer, Dr A Soundaravel.

This year, 22 persons who underwent treatment at CMCH for the influenza have died. Officials, however, say this includes patients who died of other ailments though they were admitted at the special ward set up for treating A(H1N1) cases. ?As per official records, only two persons have died of A(H1N1)at CMCH,? said Resident Medical Officer R. Soundravel. According to hospital authorities, 122 people had tested positive for A(H1N1) at CMCH till February 28. Of this, 115 were adult cases and seven paediatric cases.

Madurai: As many as eight people, mostly elderly or middle-aged, died due to influenza A (H1N1) commonly called swine flu, in the last one month in Madurai alone.

Revealing this detail to this newspaper, a senior government doctor, on condition of anonymity, said that seven out of the 32 patients treated for swine flu in the private hospitals in Madurai city in the month of February died mainly due to acute respiratory failure. The deceased was identified as Rathinasamy, son of Karuppanna Gounder, from Lawley Road, Coimbatore. CMCH authorities said Rathinasamy was brought to the hospital on Saturday on referral from a private hospital. His condition deteriorated on Tuesday and he died by midnight. With his death, the number of persons who died while being treated for A(H1N1) influenza at CMCH has increased to 27 this year. Of them, 22 were natives of Coimbatore while others were from Dindigul, Erode, Tirupr and the Nilgiris.
According to official records, only five persons actually died of the disease.

Sources at the TVMCH said R. Mariya Gracy, a diabetic with some heart ailment, was admitted to a private hospital here with breathing problem on Sunday. She was referred to the TVMCH on Monday with suspected symptoms of swine flu and the clinical investigations confirmed it.
Though Gracy was undergoing treatment at the isolated ward for H1N1 virus causing swine flu, she breathed her last on Tuesday.
