Swine flu claims one more life in Tamil Nadu

Madurai: A 55-year-old woman succumbed to swine flu at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on Tuesday taking the A (H1N1) virus toll in Tamil Nadu to three (Four - Ro) this month.
Kaliammal, who had been suffering from throat pain, cough and fever for the past few days, was admitted to the hospital on Monday, officials said.
This is first swine flu fatality in the southern districts. While a 70-year old farmer died early this month in Tirupur district in western Tamil Nadu, a 35-year old woman succumbed to the virus in Chennai yesterday.

First H1N1 death in Madurai

MADURAI: The first case of H1N1 death was reported in Madurai after Kaliammal (60) succumbed to the disease on Tuesday morning, taking the total death count in the state to four.

Kaliammal was diagnosed with H1N1 infection and had been admitted in the special ward at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) on April 13. GRH dean, Edwin Joe said that Kaliammal was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. At the time of admission, Kaliammal's condition had already worsened, he added.

Five more test positive for A (H1N1) in Tamil Nadu


A 32-year-old resident of Ashok Nagar who tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. He is one of five people in the State who were confirmed with having contracted the viral infection as of Thursday.

While a nine-year-old boy from Vellore and a 60-year-old woman from Tiruppur have been quarantined at their homes, a 19-year-old woman from Pudukottai and a 26-year-old from Tiruppatur have been admitted in isolation wards at the government hospital in Tiruchi and in Christian Medical College, Vellore, respectively.

One more case of A (H1N1)

A final year medical student of Madras Medical College tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza on Sunday, taking the total number of healthcare workers who have contracted the flu to 14. The infected healthcare workers include doctors, nurses and paramedical staff from MMC, Cancer Institute, Adyar, Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Porur and Government Kasturba Hospital, Triplicane.

The student, who was quarantined at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, attached to MMC, had no travel history and there is no known source of contact as yet, hospital authorities said.

On Saturday, a priest from a temple in Manali in North Chennai was admitted to the hospital. According to hospital dean V. Kanagasabai, three patients are on treatment at the hospital and all of them are responding well to medication.

Director of Communicable Diseases Hospital, B. Mahalakshmi, said that given healthcare workers are constantly exposed to infections in their daily work, their immunity levels would be low. Health department officials maintain that those who have contracted the infection were probably not exposed to the virus during the 2009 epidemic. ?This is herd immunity. While 60 to 70 per cent of the community would have developed immunity, the rest would not have been exposed, and so, they would have been infected,? Dr. Mahalakshmi said.

3 new cases of A (H1N1) in city

Three persons in the city and one from Tiruchi tested positive for A (H1N1) taking the total number to 127 in the State on Friday. The infected in Chennai include a 25-year-old man, and two women in their 20s. A 30-year-old woman from Tiruchi tested positive for the infection.

130 infected in TN as tamiflu relief arrives

CHENNAI: The number of people who have been affected by the (A)H1N1 virus has risen to 130 across Tamil Nadu.
On Friday, four more people tested positive. This included three from Chennai - from Pallikaranai, Royapettah and Tondiarpet. The fourth patient was a 30-year-old woman from Tiruchy. Sources in the health department informed that 5 lakh Tamiflu tablets were sent by the Centre and have been received here. The nasal drops vaccine is expected to arrive soon.

Four more A(H1N1) cases


Four women, three of them from the city, tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza on Monday. With this, the number of persons who have contracted the virus in the city rose to 76. A total of 148 persons across the State have so far contracted the virus.

A 19-year-old woman from T. Nagar, a 26-year-old woman from Korattur and a 21-year-old woman from Madras Medical College's women's hostel were confirmed to have contracted the infection, while a 41-year-old woman from Thanjavur has also tested positive.

According to Director of Public Health R.T. Porkai Pandian, ?In an epidemic it is normal to register four or five cases of the flu each day.?

One more case of H1N1 suspected in Namakkal

SALEM: One more case of H1N1 virus has been reported in Kalllakuzhipatti in Namakkal. A 10-year-old boy was admitted to the government hospital on Tuesday with high fever.

His mother said he had been suffering from fever for the past two weeks and had received treatment from a private hospital in Namakkal.

"Initially, I was told that my son had typhoid fever. Later, the private hospital staff told me he had Dengue fever. Now they say he may have the H1N1 virus. So I decided to come to the Namakkal government hospital," said the mother.

As the Namakkal GH did not have adequate facilities to treat H1N1 patients, the boy has been referred to the Salem government hospital.

When resident medical officer of Namakkal GH was contacted, he said that they could not confirm that the boy had the H1N1 virus.

Though the total number of A (H1N1) cases in Tamil Nadu rose to 151 on Sunday, Director of Public Health, R. T. Porkai Pandian said that the number of new cases is now on the decline. A 26-year-old woman from Choolaimedu, a 17 year-old youth from Madipakkam and a 22 year-old-woman from Pattalam were diagnosed with the virus on Sunday.

With all the new cases confined to the city, there are, at present, a total of 81 recorded cases of A (H1N1) virus in Chennai. The number of deaths stands at four.

A (H1N1) patient dead

A 63-year-old man from Thiruvottriyur who tested positive for A (H1N1) died on Tueday, due to complications from pre-existing diseases other than the virus.

Admitted on May 9 at the Rajiv Gandhi General Government Hospital, Dhanasekhar was a diabetic suffering from kidney failure and coronary heart disease. He was put on high- course antibiotics for his other symptoms as well as on Tamiflu to treat the A (H1N1) virus. On Tuesday evening, he developed complications and died.

After delay, H1N1 nasal vaccine to arrive on Wednesday

CHENNAI: After five people died after contracting H1N1 and more than 175 getting infected in the state, the much awaited supply of vaccines are expected to arrive here on Wednesday. The supply was delayed because the directorate of public health (DPH) did not okay the papers till Friday afternoon. DPH has now asked for the vaccines to be delivered at Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai and Chennai.

A day after the second person who tested positive for the H1N1 virus died in the state on April 20, the government had announced that it will buy 40,000 doses of vaccine, including 20,000 injections and 20,000 vials of nasal spray. It was mainly meant for health workers, since eight doctors and paramedical staffs were infected with the virus. While the injections reached the state about 10 days ago, the nasal sprays were stuck for more than a week.

49-year-old dies of H1N1 in Chennai

CHENNAI: A 49-year-old patient, who was tested positive for A H1N1 died at the Government General Hospital on Sunday.

The patient, Vivekandan, a resident of New Washermanpet, was brought on a ventilator to the hospital 10 days ago from another private hospital. Doctors said they were unable to wean him out of the life support system despite intensive treatment. "Despite best efforts we were not able to pull him out of the ventilator," said a senior doctor at the government general hospital.

This year, since January the state has recorded more than 20 A H1N1 deaths. Doctors say the virus has adapted it self to survive the summer heat. Though the government has not advised mandatory vaccination, private doctors say vaccines are good means of prevention.

The samples sent to King Institute on May 23, tested positive for the virus. The patient was given oseltamivir tablets. On May 31, the patient was shifted to the Government General Hospital. Doctors said Vivekanandan developed pneumonia, which caused organ failure.

Four of a family hospitalized for suspected swine flu symptoms

COIMBATORE: A 30-year old woman and her three children, aged between five and one, have been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here with suspected swine flu symptoms.

The woman, belonging to Porthiadanear Udhagamandalam, had been undergoing treatment at a local Primary Health Centre for severe cough and throat pain for the last two days and she along with her children were shifted here last night, officials said.

Hospital officials said necessary tests would be done to ascertain whether the four were suffering from swine flu. The woman and her children were shifted here in the backdrop of the death of a 26-year old woman member of the same family in a private hospital here. She also had symptoms of swine flu.

After brief reprieve, H1N1 death in Nilgiris

COIMBATORE: After a brief lull, H1N1 has resurfaced in the western region and has claimed the life of a 26-year-old married woman from Nilgiris district. The death occurred on late Tuesday night while she was being shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital from a private hospital near Peelamedu in Coimbatore city. The public health services department was notified on Wednesday evening claimed officials.

Four more people, neighbhours of the victim from the same family including a one year old baby girl and a three year old boy with flu and throat ache symptoms have been referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Hospital authorities have collected their throat swabs and have sent it for H1N1 tests late on Thursday evening.

H1N1 resurfaces, patients respond to treatment

COIMBATORE/ UDHAGAMANDALAM: H1N1 has resurfaced in the Western region with four people testing positive having been admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital three days ago.

Two others, who were admitted a week ago, were discharged on Sunday when their condition stabilized after receiving treatment for five days.

According to hospital sources, the affected H1N1 patients are from The Nilgiris, Dindigul, Namakkal and Thangavadu near Ooty. All patients are undergoing treatment in a separate ward and responding well, say doctors.

German boy admitted to medical college hospital

Salem (Tamil Nadu): An 18-year-old boy from Germany, who came here under a Cultural Youth Exchange Programme, was admitted to a hospital with suspected symptoms of H1N1 (swine flu).

Martin Cenoritch was admitted to Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College Hospital yesterday with suspected symptoms of H1N1 flu, Dr Valli Nayagam, Dean of the hospital said today.

He was referred to the Medical College Hospital from a private hospital, where he underwent treatment for a few days, he said. The boy's condition is stable, the Dean said.

Four cases of H1N1 reported from district

COIMBATORE: Four cases of H1N1 have been reported in Coimbatore since Wednesday. While two cases were registered in a private hospital, one case was admitted in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and one was house quarantined since he was not in critical condition. On Wednesday, two cases of H1N1 were registered at G Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial hospital.

An 82-year-old man from Erode and another 45-year-old woman from Tirupur has tested positive and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. While two cases tested positive at the CMCH. A 19-year-old boy tested positive but was house quarantined since he was not in critical condition and was detected early. Meanwhile, 43-year-old woman from Ponnaiyarajapuram was admitted in the hospital with breathing problems and she tested positive for H1N1.

H1N1 infection claims two lives in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Two patients, who tested positive for H1N1 infection, died here in the city within a span of 72 hours last week at two major private hospitals. A 44-year-old housewife from Sriram Nagar near Vellalore and a 77-year-old man from Uppilipayam died while undergoing treatment at these facilities after they were diagnosed for the viral infection on October 26 and 28 respectively.

These are the first cases of H1N1 deaths in which residents from Coimbatore succumbed to the disease this year, as the other earlier fatalities were patients who had come here to seek treatment from other districts and Kerala. Both these deaths were reported in localities falling under city municipal corporation limits.

"Both patients were undergoing treatment at private hospitals in the city after they were tested positive for H1N1 infection," said R Damodharan, deputy director, Public Health Services, Coimbatore.

Another H1N1 death in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: One more person died at a private hospital in the city on late Monday night after he was tested H1N1 positive. With this death, the toll in the city, of the number of people who died due to H1N1, has gone to three. Earlier, a 44-year-old woman from Sriram Nagar near Vellalore and a 77-year-old man from Uppilipalayam were declared dead on October 26 and 28 at two private hospitals in the city. The total number of H1N1 deaths in Coimbatore since January 2012 has gone to six out of which three persons were from Tirupur, Nilgiris and Palakkad district in Kerala, who were later referred to hospitals in the city for treatment.

"The latest victim was undergoing treatment at G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital. We are taking all the measures necessary to maintain precaution against all the people who had come in contact with the infected people. Situation is being closely monitored," said Dr R Damodharan, deputy director, public health services, Coimbatore.
