Girl succumbs to fever, panic in Usilampatti

MADURAI: With the number of dengue-related deaths in the southern districts mounting, Usilampatti municipality called for an emergency meeting of officials and elected representatives after an eight-year-old girl succumbed to fever on Wednesday morning. The emergency meeting convened on Wednesday evening discussed prevention measures with opposition councillors demanding rectification of the irregular drinking water supply in the local body.
Santhya, daughter of Shanthakumar from Madurai, was staying at her relatives' house for the village festival and she suffered fever for three days before succumbing to the disease at a private hospital in Madurai on Wednesday morning. As the news spread, the local body called for an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.
