CHENNAI: A 60-year-old woman died and at least 60 others have been hospitalized with acute diarrhea. Some of these patients are suspected to be suffering from cholera.

Doctors at Kilpauk Medical College said one of the four children admitted to the hospital in the last couple of days had tested positive in the 'level one' test (hanging drop) for cholera.

One case confirmed; 30 treated for diarrhoea in last four days

At least one child has tested positive for cholera and three other children who are suspected to have the infection were admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet. A total of 15 adults have been admitted to the hospital for treatment of diarrhoeal complaints.

Apart from this, around 15 patients, including three children, are currently undergoing treatment at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH). All those admitted to the two hospitals are from Bhoobathy Nagar and Pullapuram, localities in the vicinity of the Chetpet railway station.

It was a torrid Saturday for doctors and Corporation officials, as a cholera scare went ?viral? in the slums of Chetput, a day after eight persons were hospitalised with strong symptoms. Especially after the death of 60-year-old Kulammal, who apparently had bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea, about 75 residents from all three slums converged at the Kilpauk Medical College for ?cholera? treatment. Sorting out the patients, doctors identified 34 people with strong symptoms of cholera/ADD (Acute Diarrhoea Disorder) and began treating them.

6 more children admitted with diarrhoea

On Monday, six more children were admitted with complaints of diarrhoea and dehydration to the paediatric ward of Government Kilpauk Hospital, bringing the total number admitted to 11. There are 10 male and five female patients in the medical wards. At the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet, there are currently over 50 patients, with 22 in the male ward. According to sources, so far 140 people in the city have been treated for acute diarrhoea.

CHENNAI: While Chennai Corporation officials deny cholera deaths in the city, the civic body's death registry shows that 29 people died of the disease between January and June this year. The number is higher than the total cholera deaths in the city in the previous five years.

Between 2005 and 2011, the city recorded 19 cholera deaths.

When confronted with its own records, the corporation said the deaths happened in the "extended areas of the city". The argument is flawed as the areas from where deaths were reported ? Nolambur, Maduravoyal, Alandur and parts of Porur ? come under the corporation limits after the city expansion in September last.

CHENNAI: Nothing is wrong with the healthcare scene in the city, except the way the corporation records causes of deaths. That's Mayor Saidai Duraiwamy contesting the TOI report on Tuesday that 29 people in the city died of cholera between January and June this year.

The report published by TOI was sourced from the corporation's own death registry. In a rejoinder, sent to the newspaper minutes after the council meeting, the corporation said the data operators, who were on contract, had made a wrong entry. "The data entry form has got a drop down box with 40 diseases and some of the cardiac arrest cases were incorrectly selected as cholera," the rejoinder said.

It may be the first time the civic body has acknowledged a faulty system, but it's not the first time the agency is denying or under-reporting deaths due to communicable diseases. The corporation had done it with H1N1 deaths, dengue and rabies in both government and private hospitals. Doctors say they are often asked not to announce the cause of death if it was due to a communicable disease.

Mayor says no cholera deaths in city this year

Responding to media reports on Wednesday on the number of cholera deaths in Chennai, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy clarified that the data available with the civic body was wrong. ?We checked with the birth and death registry and found that the data entry operators had made typographical error. Cardiac arrest was misspelt as Cholera by the data entry operators,? said Mr. Duraisamy.

?There have been no deaths due to Cholera in Chennai in 2012,? he added.

On Saturday morning, Pullammal, a 60-year-old woman resident of Ossankulam in Chetpet, who had been admitted three days ago for treatment of diarrhoea, died following renal complications.

?As long as these people continue to defecate in the open, along the railway tracks, they will continue to fall sick even if we provide them with clean water,? said a corporation official. However, for hundreds of families living in one-room huts here, the railway tracks are the nearest they have to a public toilet.

The only public toilet in Osonkullam has been boarded up and blocked with rubble for over a year now. ?We have asked them to demolish this toilet building; nobody here can use it. After it was opened, nobody was employed to clean or guard the place. It is now condemned, and a big nuisance to us.

On the three square-foot stretch of tiled floor outside the public latrine in Trustpuram stays a Nepali family, a father, mother and their three-year-old son. ?I am looking for a job and we don?t have anywhere to stay. We pay rent to live here and find it safer than sleeping on the pavement. Please don?t make us leave,? said the man, unwilling to divulge the rent amount or to be photographed. ?This toilet is not that dirty, not many people use it,? he defends his temporary home.

A total of 27 cases of diarrhoea, including 26 at the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet, were reported to the Chennai Corporation on Thursday.

However, a systematic compilation of diarrhoea cases in the city has not been conducted. Many private hospitals are reporting fresh cases. One hospital in Chetpet, for instance, reported at least five new cases on Wednesday and Thursday. The Corporation is required to monitor diseases reported in all private hospitals located in the city limits.

CHENNAI: One more person tested positive for cholera and 26 others were admitted to city hospitals with diarrhoea on Thursday. The latest case took, the total number of reported cholera cases in one week has gone up to four.

Corporation officials said patients with diarrhoea were admitted to Communicable Diseases Hospital and Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. Fifty-eight patients in the city are being treated for acute diarrhoeal diseases in the two hospitals. The officials, however, did not reveal details of the areas from the patients had come.

22 in hospital for diarrhoea in Chennai

Twenty-two people with symptoms of acute diarrhoeal disease (ADD) were admitted to the Communicable Disease Hospital and KMC on Friday.

While doctors are picking up patients with diarrhoea through health camps and door-to-door surveys, private doctors are also seeing cases of ADD, as this is the season for it, they say.

As diarrhoea rages, public anger boils over

A group of residents, along with activists of a few organisations, staged a demonstration on the premises of Ripon Buildings on Friday demanding adequate measures to cope with diarrhoeal diseases in the city.

The protestors dispersed after Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy assured them of immediate action. The group of protestors gave a list of affected localities where civic conditions need to be improved by the Chennai Corporation. The areas mentioned in the list included Pullapuram, Boopathy Nagar, Ossankulam, Chetpet, Tiruvottiyur, Pulianthope and Desiya Nagar in R.K.Nagar. They also stressed the need for immediate intervention by authorities for preventing mixing of sewage with drinking water in many localities.

Protest outside Ripon buildings against increasing diarrhoea, cholera cases

CHENNAI: At least 60 activists from the All India Women's Democratic Association and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) gathered on the lawns of the Ripon Buildings and raised slogans against the civic agencies indifference to the increasing incidence of diarrhoea and cholera cases.

On Wednesday, Corporation Mayor Saidai Duraisamy told the council that there were no deaths due to cholera and reports on 29 deaths this year in the news papers were false. For nearly a week, more than 100 patients with diarrhoea have been admitted to Kilapuk Medical College and Communicable Diseases Hospital.

A day after massive protests by members of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on account of reports of cholera deaths, there were a few anxious moments at Ripon Buildings, on Thursday, following the death of a woman in Chetpet.

In response to the demonstration by DMK cadres on Wednesday, the Corporation of Chennai released data on the number of deaths due to diarrhoea and cholera during the tenure of M.K. Stalin as Chennai mayor.

There were 53 diarrhoea deaths and 15 cholera deaths during his tenure, as per the the data released.

According to information with Chennai Corporation, 24,839 cases of diarrhoea and 8,397 cases of cholera were reported during Stalin?s tenure as mayor.

Chennai Corporation?s inquiry into the alleged role of employees in wrongly recording data on cholera deaths will be completed in two days. The Corporation will take severe action against those responsible, an official said.

While the outbreak of Acute Diarrheal Disease had let up over the past week, three patients with severe symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting were admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital at Tondiarpet on Tuesday, raising speculations that the cholera bacterium was doing the rounds again.

The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday denied that the death of a 5-year-old child in Meenambal Nagar of Tondiarpet was due to cholera. Residents of the locality said they were planning a protest against the authorities of the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) on Wednesday as they suspected officials were ?trying to mislead by saying there is no cholera?.

?The officials forced us to bury my son in a hurry. When we requested if we could wait for relatives to arrive, they warned that the disease would spread,? said Suresh, the father of Satish who died on Friday.

CHENNAI: Three weeks after TOI broke the story on the corporation's death registry showing 29 cholera deaths in the city, heads have begun rolling. The state government on Monday evening suspended city health officer P Kuganantham, for not maintaining the records accurately. Four other officers from the corporation's health department including a statistics officer were also suspended by the commissioner the same evening.
This decision comes, after the state government and the corporation, ordered an enquiry into the 'discrepancies' and 'wrong entries' in the corporation's official death registry. The investigation was headed by joint commissioner (health) Pooja Kulkarni, and a report was submitted to the government recently, said a corporation official. While details of the investigation report were not clear, the corporation on Monday ordered the suspension of four people in the health department, including statistics officer Mohammed Kali Fadulla Shariff, two sanitary inspectors (SI) from zone 11?Selvarani and S Martin D Borus-- and one SI from zone 8 Moses Prabhakar. Corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan who ordered the suspensions said, "They have been suspended for dereliction of duty on their part, further investigations into the matter has also been ordered."
Sources say, 'dereliction of duty' translated to wrong entry of data into the system, not checking the registry regularly to realize the discrepancies that had crept into the records and release of confidential data. When TOI accessed the registry which clearly showed 29 deaths had occurred till July due to cholera, along with the Chennai Corporation had claimed that the registry had been wrong.

Cholera deaths: Chennai city health officer, 4 others suspended

Action taken for alleged failure in monitoring statistics with regard to cholera deaths

The State government on Monday suspended the Chennai Corporation?s city health officer P. Kuganantham, for an alleged failure in monitoring vital statistical information.

The suspension was the outcome of a preliminary inquiry by the civic body?s joint commissioner (health) into the issue of news reports that said 29 cases of cholera deaths had been reported in the city since January this year.

Political parties including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party held protests in the city recently, demanding immediate measures to control the spread of cholera. As leaders such as M.K. Stalin blamed the civic body for the cholera deaths, the Corporation conducted an inquiry. The civic body then said that it was because of a ?data entry error? by some of its officials that the figure of 29 cholera deaths had been arrived at and reported by the media.

Corporation officials said data entry operators had erroneously clicked on ?cholera? instead of ?cardiac arrest? in the drop-down list of 46 options that are given as standard causes of death in their database. Officials verified all the original medical reports of the 29 alleged cholera deaths and found that 24 of the cases were due to cardiac arrest. Some other deaths were due to chronic liver disease, officials said.

Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Friday hit out at DMK leader M K Stalin for failing to initiate action to control cholera and diarrhoea when he was a Mayor as well as Deputy Chief Minister and ruled out any deaths due to the two diseases in the city during the current AIADMK regime, during a meeting of Councillors on Friday at the Chennai Corporation.
?There are no deaths due to cholera and diarrhoea after I took office,? the Mayor said, while charting out the figures of cholera and diarrhoea deaths during the 68 months (1996-2002) when Stalin was Mayor and from 2006-2011 when M Subramaniam was Mayor, sparking protests and walkout by DMK councillors.
Reacting to a query raised by DMK Councillor Pushparaj from ward number 71, the Mayor said that from November 2011 to August 20, 2012, there has been no deaths due to cholera and diarhoea. However, he admitted that 1,793 people suffered from diarrhoea and 136 people had cholera during this period.
But, it was the figures during the DMK regime that sparked protests from the DMK flanks. ?From 1996-2002, when DMK leader M K Stalin was the Mayor, 23,732 people were admitted to hospitals due to diarrhoea and 8,777 had cholera. Among those 52 died due to diarrhoea and 15 due to cholera,? he said as DMK councilors stood up and protested.

The epidemic which was thought to have been completely wiped off has made a return after a period of five years. The Cholera has been detected in two children - a two-year-old and another 8-month-old.

One more case of cholera has been identified at Puthiyathura, this time the grandmother of the two children who were earlier found to be afflicted with the disease. However, Kochuthresya?s symptoms were mild and she was allowed to go home after treatment at the Pulluvila Primary Health Centre.
The first case was that of nine-month-old Saira, who came to the hospital with severe diarrhoea. ??She came with severe dehydration and we sent some samples for analysis. She was admitted last Monday and discharged on Friday. It was only after discharge that we got the test results and identified the problem as cholera,?? said Dr Lalitha Kailas, head of the Paediatrics Department at SAT Hospital.

Puthiyathura under Cholera grip, four cases confirmed

Four more diarrhoea cases in Thiruvanathapuram

Four more cases of diarrhoea were reported from Puthiyathura area on Friday, where intensive preventive action against water-borne diseases are being carried out by the health authorities.

Till now, 28 cases of diarrhoea and three confirmed cases of cholera has been reported from the region. On Friday, health field workers completed a second round of super chlorination of all wells in the locality.

CHENNAI: A men's hostel on Langs Garden Road in Pudupet was sealed by Chennai Corporation officials on Monday afternoon, after seven of its guests were hospitalised with diarrhoea. Civic body officials were alerted to the sudden rash of cases when they discovered that four people with diarrhoea from the same address had been admitted to Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet. When officials went to the spot, they found that the hostel was one of the city's many 'mansions', lodges notorious for their squalid little rooms.

When the officials entered the three-storey building, they found a narrow stairway leading to several 10ft x 10ft rooms. "The owner had rented out the 44 rooms in the building to 400 people," an official said. "Diseases like tuberculosis can spread rapidly in such overcrowded conditions." According to corporation rules, lodges should provide each guest with space of at least 100sqft.
