26 nursing students hospitalized in CMCH

COIMBATORE: As many as 26 second year nursing students of Government Medical College here have been admitted with severe viral fever to the General Hospital three days ago after they reportedly drank contaminated water provided at their hostel situated in the Medical College Hospital campus. The students accuse the hospital management of landing them in this plight due to poor hygiene.

Over 639 girl students are pursuing a diploma in nursing at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. All the students have been staying at a hostel in the college campus. They allege that they were forced to drink water from a common tank within the hospital compound. Despite several complaints that the water was contaminated, the authorities had not taken any action, they say. Sewage water had mixed with the drinking water and the students drank the water, admit even the higher officials of the medical college. Students told TOI that they had been suffering from cough, head ache and vomiting for the last five days.

Collector orders clean-up at CMCH

Six students - Angalavalli, Thankam, Bhanu, Pandeeswari, Priya and Ratna - are still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital while another girl has been shifted to a private hospital.

According to hospital dean R Vimala, all the affected students were subjected to different tests which confirmed that they did not have H1N1 and Chikungunya. "None of the students are critical. All of them are fast recovering,'' she added. Among the 638 students of the nursing college, 139 are in the hostel. The unaffected students were given preventive care, she said.

The district collector stated that strict measures would be taken to ensure potable water and hygienic living conditions in the medical college campus. He ordered a 10-day vacation for the nursing school and directed students to vacate the hostel soon.

"Two new water tanks will be installed at the hostel and quality of food and other services will be closely monitored,'' he said.

Two CMCH nurses test positive for dengue fever

COIMBATORE: Out of the 26 Coimbatore Medical College nursing students who were admitted to the hospital after they showed symptoms of viral fever, two students have been diagnosed positive for dengue fever. The victims, Thangam and Sandhya, are currently undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital along with six others who are admitted to the general ward. The remaining students have been discharged after treatment on Tuesday.

This is a tragic thing to happen to these nursing students. It's hard to explain, since Tamil Nadu is the most industrialized state in India, with lots of investment by multinational firms.

Water samples collected and sent to Water Lab for testing.Cleaning of water sump is in the process. Investigation Closed Treatment:- Supportive thearpy. Poor Environmental Sanitation around student hostel campus. Proper Health education must be given.And awareness must be created among the students and people to form clean & Healthy environment

control
Cases of fever reported from Nursing Student?s Hostel, Coimbatore Medical College,
Coimbatore Corporation possibly. Battery of tests conducted for the blood samples
collected from fever cases included Serology (IgM antibody) test for Dengue,
Chikungunya and Leptospirosis, and Widal Test for Typhoid. Out of 104 blood samples
sent to Microbiology Lab, CMCH, Coimbatore, 5 samples tested positive for Dengue and
2 positive for Widal test; rest result awaited. . Source reduction and fogging activities
undertaken. Supportive treatment along with health education 2. given to patients.
