The Animal and Plant Inspection and Quarantine Bureau announced on the evening of today (19) that the dead ducks found on the industrial road in Mailiao, Yunlin, were inspected and found a new type of H5N2 subtype highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, reminding the industry to strengthen poultry On-site biosafety protection to prevent virus invasion.
The Bureau of Inspection and Quarantine stated that the H5 subtype gene of the new H5N2 subtype highly pathogenic avian influenza virus detected this time is similar to H5 of the H5N8 subtype virus detected in wild bird and poultry farms in Korea in the winter of 2020 and early this year. The genetic similarity is 99.2%; the N2 subtype gene is similar to the 2020 Hokkaido wild avian influenza virus strain, and the genetic similarity is 98.9%.
According to the Bureau of Inspection and Quarantine, the HA gene and NA gene show that this virus is completely different from the H5N2 avian influenza virus strain circulating in Taiwan's poultry farms, and belongs to a new virus strain.
The Yunlin Animal and Plant Epidemiological Institute recently conducted a comprehensive inspection of poultry farms within a radius of 3 kilometers from the detection site. No case of the virus has been found so far. However, a highly pathogenic avian influenza of H5N5 subtype was detected in another meat duck farm. According to standard operating procedures, the epidemic prevention station carried out the destruction of 7-week-old meat ducks in the field, culling a total of 2402 ducks, and supervised the industry to complete the cleaning and disinfection of the field.
The Bureau of Inspection and Quarantine urges that although no new H5N2 subtype avian influenza virus has been found in local poultry farms, poultry farm operators should still implement various biosafety work on poultry farms in accordance with prevention and control measures to prevent the invasion or occurrence of avian influenza epidemics. After investigation, if there is a case that does not comply with the prevention and control operation, the maximum penalty is NT$150,000 in accordance with the regulations.
