Taitung's Animal Disease Control Center said it had received reports from the farm in Taimali (太麻里), which has around 600 chickens and more than 100 ducks and geese, that chickens have been dying in large numbers since early July.

Shih noted that avian flu outbreaks have been reported every two or three days on average since the beginning of this year, mainly in Changhua (彰化) and Yunlin (雲林) counties.
The latest outbreak is Taitung's first since January, when a small chicken farm of around 200 chickens reported infection.
