TAIPEI?The H5 avian influenza virus has hit six more poultry farms in Taiwan, with ducks and geese likely infected by migratory birds, authorities said Sunday.

The Council of Agriculture said tests confirmed H5N2 strain was present in geese at four farms in central Yunlin County, in Taiwan?s west, and a sample of duck eggs from a farm in Pingtung County, in the south.

A sample from a goose farm in Chiayi County, in Taiwan?s southwest, also tested positive for a H5N8 strain, which the council said was possibly more virulent.

Genetic tests showed the two strains were different from the avian viruses that hit Taiwanese farms last year, but similar to the ones that hit South Korea and China, which led the council to believe this outbreak was caused by migratory birds.

All birds at the six affected farms will be culled, the council said...

?As of this morning [yesterday] a total of 234 poultry farm workers and epidemic prevention personnel have been put on the list, including 94 employees from a layer chicken farm on Pingtung County?s Dawu Mountain (大武山) and 140 workers at six duck or goose farms in southern Taiwan,? CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said.

Chuang said that of these 234 people, three have exhibited flu-like symptoms, including a sore throat, coughing and a stuffy nose, adding that the centers have taken samples from the trio for testing, the results of which are expected today...
