Enterovirus victim dies as death toll rises to 10

The China Post news staff

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- An enterovirus victim died in the hospital at Tainan yesterday, raising the death toll to 10.

A Center of Disease Control spokesman confirmed the death of a boy, two years and eight months old, at Chi Mei Hospital in Tainan.

Shih Wen-yi said the boy was transferred to Chi Mei from the Christian Hospital in Chiayi.

The boy showed symptoms at his home in Taipao near Chiayi on June 17, Shih said. The boy was taken to the Chiayi hospital at once.

"As his situation deteriorated," the CDC spokesman said, "the boy was transferred to Chi Mei, where he succumbed."

He said five more serious enterovirus cases were reported from Tainan, Chiayi, Changhua and Kaohsiung.

The serious cases totaled 277 across Taiwan.

All schools began the summer vacation, and the CDC said the enterovirus epidemic is expected to let up before September.

A few more serious enterovirus cases may be reported after schools reopen, he added.

Number of severe enterovirus cases tops 300

The number of severe enterovirus infections recorded in Taiwan has topped 300 so far this year, and ten of them were fatal.

On Saturday the Center for Disease Control said the confirmation of six more severe cases of the viral infection on Friday brought the total number to over 300.

However, the center said the increase did not mean the enterovirus outbreak is worsening. It said most of the severe cases confirmed this week were actually infections that occurred more than two weeks ago at the peak of the outbreak.
The center also said the country's enterovirus outbreak is easing off.

Number of severe enterovirus cases tops 300

CNA

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The accumulated number of severe enterovirus infections recorded in the country has topped 300 so far this year, 10 of which were fatal, a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) official said yesterday.

The confirmation of six more severe cases of the viral infection on Friday brought the total number to 302, with 38 other suspect cases still being tested for an accurate diagnosis, said CDC Deputy Director General Shih Wen-yi.

However, Shih said the increase does not mean the enterovirus outbreak is worsening, because most of the severe cases confirmed this week were actually infections that occurred more than two weeks ago at the peak of the outbreak.

Of the 11 suspect cases reported to the CDC this week, only one has been confirmed to be enterovirus infection, compared with 20 of 34 suspect cases that were confirmed as enterovirus infections last week and 50 of 62 suspect cases confirmed the previous week, Shih said.

The trend indicates the country's enterovirus outbreak is easing off at the start of the summer vacation, he said.

CDC data shows that almost all serious enterovirus cases recorded this year were caused by EV71 -- the deadliest type of enterovirus -- and most of the infected patients were young children aged 0-5.

Enteroviruses are the most common cause of aseptic meningitis and can be deadly, especially in infants. EV71 is one of the major causative agents of hand-foot-and-mouth syndrome and is sometimes associated with severe central nervous system diseases.

In 1998, Taiwan experienced a serious outbreak of EV71, with 405 severe infections recorded, 78 of which were fatal. Another EV71 outbreak in 2005 resulted in 145 severe infections, 15 of which were fatal.

Chiayi allows tax break for enterovirus

CNA

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- Recreational businesses in the southern county of Chiayi that decide to temporarily halt their operations due to the enterovirus outbreak can now apply for an exemption from the county's entertainment tax. The county government's Finance and Taxation Bureau said that the move is being made as part of efforts to halt the spread of enterovirus.

The bureau said that any businesses that decide to shut down due to enterovirus concerns can apply for the entertainment exemption, which will be granted after their case is examined by bureau officials. After the outbreak is contained, the entertainment tax exemption will be lifted, the bureau said.

Any businesses granted the exemption that fail to notify the bureau after resuming their operations will face a fine of between NT$15,000 (US$492) and NT$150,000, the bureau warned. Enterprises found guilty of evading taxes will be required to pay the taxes owing and a fine amounting to 5 to 10 times the unpaid amount, according to the bureau.

The enterovirus outbreak began in southern Taiwan earlier this year and has since spread to cover all parts of Taiwan. Most of the patients have been children under the age of 5.

Enterovirus is the most common cause of aseptic meningitis and can cause serious illness and death, especially in infants and people whose immune systems have been compromised.

Enterovirus outbreak worst in eleven years

The nation's health authorities have logged four more serious enterovirus cases in the past week. This brings the total number of cases to 311, the worst outbreak in eleven years.

Although the enterovirus season peaked in late June, new cases of serious complications from the virus are still being discovered. The authorities expect a further, smaller surge in the disease in September as students return to school.
