Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's Department of Health (DOH) held an exercise against avian flu Saturday at a community college in Hsinyi district, after a recent outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu in poultry in neighboring South Korea.
The bird flu outbreak in South Korea, whose government has therefore ordered the immediate slaughter of some 300,000 chickens, has caused concern in Taiwan, since the two countries are geographically close and on the same migration route for migratory birds, although Taiwan remains free of bird flu.
The rehearsal, dubbed "White Egret No. 8, " focused on efforts to minimize panic in the event of an avian flu outbreak.
Chiu Chan-hsien, a section chief of the DOH's Center for Disease Control (CDC) , noted that his agency has been cooperating with community colleges around the country and National Cheng Kung University in training volunteers to strengthen the avian flu prevention network. and aims to attract some 100,000 such volunteer workers.
