Health Dept: Enterovirus outbreak should peak soon
The Health Minister said Monday that it would be clear this week whether or not the most serious enterovirus season in a decade has peaked. He said this week is the crucial period when the epidemic is supposed to start slowing down.
Enterovirus is an easily transmittable childhood disease that causes serious complications in about one in a hundred infected children. As of Monday, there have been 232 confirmed serious cases this season and eight fatalities.
Even if the outbreak passes its peak this week, new enterovirus cases will not disappear overnight. The minister predicted that it will take four to six weeks for the outbreak to wind down to its baseline level.
The minister said the department is working hard to keep the number of serious complication cases under 300 this year.
