Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) A strain of avian influenza virus identified as H5N3 was detected Friday in Taiwan during a widening investigation of a bird flu outbreak on poultry farms around Taiwan, according to animal inspection authorities.

It is the first time that the H5N3 strain was found in Taiwan, according to the Council of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.

Since the avian flu outbreak was first reported last week, three new strains of bird flu viruses, including variants of H5N2 and H5N8, have been discovered in Taiwan, the bureau said.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, 137 poultry farms had been inspected and samples had been collected for laboratory testing. The latest results showed that 101 of the farms were infected, and the H5N3 virus was found at two of them, the bureau said.

Abnormal mortalities were observed in two goose farms in Kao-Hsiung City and Ping-Tung County. Local disease control center staff went to these farms to conduct movement restrictions and clinical inspection. Dead geese were taken to the National Laboratory (Animal Health Research Institute, AHRI) for diagnosis. Specific RNA of avian influenza virus was detected and subtyped as H5N3 by RT-PCR. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed by the National Laboratory according to sequencing analysis of HA0 cleavage site. All the geese within the infected farms were destroyed or died. Thorough cleaning and disinfection will be conducted after stamping out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within 3 km radius of infected farms are under intensified surveillance for 3 months.

More farms hit by H5N3 strain
CULLING THE WEAK:The Council of Agriculture?s statistics showed that a total of 142 farms had been affected by the virus, resulting in the extermination of 89,806 birds
By Sean Lin / Staff reporter

The Council of Agriculture yesterday announced the latest inspection results of the widening avian influenza outbreaks that hit the nation?s poultry farming sector last week, which found three more broiler goose farms in Pingtung County that had been struck by the H5N3 subtype, after the virus strain was identified for the first time in Taiwan on Friday.

The latest statistics showed that 142 poultry farms across the nation were hit by the highly pathogenic strains consisting of the H5 subtype, of which 57 had been culled...
