Dengue case total hits 10-year high, CDC says
SOME GOOD NEWS: The weekly number of flu-like cases has declined for three straight weeks, while the number of new COVID-19 cases had dropped for four weeks
By Lee I-chia / Staff reporter

A total of 425 locally acquired dengue cases have been reported so far this year, the highest number for the period in a decade, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday, while also warning that although weekly flu cases are dropping slightly, they are still more than in the past three years.

CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Deputy Director Lee Chia-lin (李佳琳) said the local infection risk of dengue fever is continuing to increase, and as many confirmed cases involve older people and dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) and serotype 2 (DENV-2) have been detected, people who have been infected should be alert for signs of severe complications like hemorrhaging.

Lee said that 127 local cases of dengue fever were reported last week: 95 in Tainan, 23 in Yunlin County, seven in Kaohsiung and two in Taichung...

Tainan dengue outbreak set to worsen: mayor
CHALLENGING: Typhoon Doksuri would likely drive mosquitoes into residential buildings, heightening infection risks throughout the city, Huang Wei-che said
By Jonathan Chin / Staff writer, with CNA

Typhoon Doksuri might cause Tainan’s dengue fever outbreak to worsen in the coming days, Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said on Wednesday, as the total number of confirmed cases rose to 587.

Rainfall from the typhoon would complicate the municipality’s efforts to stop the spread of dengue fever by flooding the basements of old housing projects, unoccupied structures, vacant lots and construction zones, he told a meeting at the city’s epidemic command center.

“The city’s challenges will begin only after the storm,” the Tainan Public Health Bureau quoted the mayor as saying in a statement...

Dengue fever: the virus is spreading, another serious case

15-08-2023 Editor

The dengue epidemic continues to rise, with 11 counties and cities currently experiencing local cases and the number of cases nationwide exceeding 1,500 hitting a ten-year high. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has once again called for stronger prevention and control measures against mosquito vectors.

1,310 dengue cases were reported in Tainan, accounting for more than 80% of the total, followed by 175 cases in Yunlin and 58 cases in Kaohsiung; in addition, with the summer holidays, around 100 cases contracted abroad have been recorded this year, including 28 in Thailand.

CDC epidemiologist Lin Yung-Ching (林詠青) reported a new serious case today. She is an 80-year-old from Yunlin who suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. She started feeling dizzy in early August, and after being admitted to hospital her falling platelet count prompted the doctor to test her for dengue fever. She also suffers from pneumonia and was transferred to the intensive care unit.
