Daily increase of dengue fever cases breaks 600 in Tainan

Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) The number of dengue fever cases in Tainan -- by far the worst-hit area around the country -- has recorded a daily increase of 604, bringing the total to 13,871 in Taiwan since the start of this summer, officials said Tuesday.

Tainan has reported 12,066 dengue cases since May, with only two of the city's 37 districts, Longqi and Beimen, remaining free of the mosquito-borne disease, according to the Tainan City Department of Health...

The number of reported dengue fever cases on Tuesday reached 719 ? the highest daily number since May, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.

Among the cases, 600 were reported in Tainan and 106 in Kaohsiung ? the highest daily record for Kaohsiung this year, while six were reported in Pingtung County, four in New Taipei City, and one each in Taichung, Hsinchu County and Yunlin County.

The total number of reported dengue fever cases nationwide since May has reached 14,590, with 52 patients being treated in intensive care units.

At a meeting of the legislature?s Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee yesterday morning, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Alicia Wang (王育敏) questioned whether the CDC is too slow confirming cases of death caused by dengue fever, as its data in the morning showed 25 confirmed cases, with 48 yet to be examined.

Deadliest-ever dengue outbreak in Taiwan

Taiwan is suffering its deadliest ever outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever with a record high of 42 deaths, double the number that died in 2014.

Last year saw 15,732 cases ? by far the highest in nearly three decades ? with this year shaping up to overtake.

The total number of cases for 2015 has already hit 15,282, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said, the majority of them in southern Tainan City.

Youngest case of dengue fever found, cases reach record high

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A four-day-old boy in Tainan has become the youngest reported case of dengue fever, yesterday. The city's Department of Health director, Lin Sheng-che (林聖哲), said the child was born on Sept. 17, caught a fever four days later, and was diagnosed with the disease on Sept. 22.

Dengue fever cases have reached a record high of 16,074 this year, surpassing 15,492 ? the highest recorded number in previous years, according to latest figures released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾病管制署) yesterday.

With new cases escalating, CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) observed that the dengue fever outbreak is currently at its peak of activity. The CDC also suspects one reason behind the sharp increase is the concentrated use of "rapid diagnostic tests" in the past few days, which have helped to identify many potential cases...
 
Number of dengue fever cases tops 18,000

Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) The number of dengue fever infections reported in Taiwan since May when the dengue fever started has reached 18,365, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Wednesday.

The latest figure represents an increase of 406 cases from the previous day, the CDC said.

As of Tuesday, 15,793 cases had been reported in the southern municipality of Tainan and 2,266 in neighboring Kaohsiung, according to CDC figures.

More Than 20,500 Dengue Infections and 56 Confirmed Deaths in Taiwan

TAIPEI ? The number of dengue infections in Taiwan has exceeded 20,500 so far this year, with 56 confirmed deaths while another 56 deaths with symptoms similar to dengue are being examined, the Centers for Disease Control, or CDC, said on Monday.

Currently there are 61 dengue patients in intensive care units, while 83.4 percent of the total number of infected, have recovered fully, according to the CDC.

Taipei, Oct. 14 (CNA) Dengue fever has taken 106 lives nationwide in Taiwan since the start of May, according to the latest updates by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), which also show that most of the deaths were reported in Tainan, southern Taiwan.

Tainan recorded 90 deaths, while 14 were reported in Kaohsiung and two in Pingtung County, all in the southern part of the island, according to the CECC statistics.

Taipei, Nov. 11 (CNA) Taiwan has confirmed another nine deaths from hemorrhagic dengue fever, bringing the total number of fatalities since May 1 to 150, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported Wednesday.

The confirmed deaths were in Kaohsiung, which recorded eight, and in Tainan, where there was one, the center said, adding that another 23 deaths are being examined to determine whether they were also caused by dengue fever.

The latest deaths involved five men and four women, aged between 54 and 81. Most of them were suffering from chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure, and heart disease, and were therefore at higher risk, the center said.

Taiwan reported another 395 cases of dengue fever the previous day, with the southern cities of Kaohsiung and Tainan, where the dengue fever outbreak has been concentrated this summer, recording 342 and 48 new cases, respectively.

The total number of dengue fever cases reported since the start of May has reached 32,390, with 22,243 in Tainan, 9,561 in Kaohsiung, and 185 in Pingtung.

TAIPEI - Another 11 deaths related to dengue fever were confirmed in Taiwan, taking the death toll since May to 195, the island' s disease control agency announced Tuesday.

The new cases, six male and five female, were reported from Kaohsiung city in south Taiwan, aged between 29 and 84, the agency said in a press release.

Among them was a 29-year-old man with cerebral palsy, the youngest victim recorded so far this year. Most of the other deceased suffered from chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease, the agency statement said.
