Week 1: (January 2–8, 2011), influenza activity increased in Taiwan and pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus has become the major type in community. Most of the influenza viruses match the 2010–11 vaccine component.

15% were positive for influenza

There were 26 new complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 7 new seasonal H3N2 cases and 2 new seasonal influenza A untyped cases during week 1. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 37 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 11 from the pandemic H1N1 2009 and 26 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 52 was 246, which was below the average number during the past 3 weeks (275 deaths).

During week 2 (January 9–15, 2011), influenza activity increased in Taiwan and pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus has become the major type in community. Most of the influenza viruses match the 2010–11 vaccine component.

Of the 609 specimens tested during week 52 2010–week 2 2011, 140 (23%) were positive for influenza viruses, 94 (15%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses, 25 (4% )were positive for influenza B viruses, 18 (3%) were positive for influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and 3 (<1% )were positive for influenza virus untyped A.

There were 79 new complicated influenza infections during week 2, including 73 complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 5 seasonal H3N2 cases and 1 seasonal influenza A untyped case... Since July 1, 2010, there have been 41 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 13 from the pandemic H1N1 2009 and 28 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 1 was 279, which was slightly above the average number during the past 3 weeks (274 deaths).

Outpatient ILI: 1.71%, a 12% increase compared with the previous week (1.53%).
Emergency room ILI: 15.96%, a 12% increase compared with the previous week (14.28%).

Week 8:
Influenza activity in Taiwan peaked at week 4 and the rate of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness decreased gradually. Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus is predominant in community. Most of the influenza viruses match the 2010–11 vaccine component.

Of the 465 specimens tested during week 6–week 8, 176(38%) were positive for influenza viruses, 128(28%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses, 34(7%)were positive for influenza B viruses, 11(2%)were positive for influenza virus untyped A and 3 (1%) were positive for influenza A (H3N2) viruses.

There were 76 new complicated influenza infections during week 8, including 72 complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 2 seasonal H3N2 cases, and 2 seasonal influenza A untyped cases. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 1,692 reports of complicated influenza infections, including 1,000 reports of complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infections (one patient is co-infected with pandemic [H1N1] 2009 virus and seasonal influenza virus
type H3N2). Since July 1, 2010, there have been 96 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 64 from the pandemic H1N1 2009, 29 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 2 from the seasonal influenza B strain and 1 from seasonal influenza A untyped strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 7 was 376, which was below the average number during the past 3 weeks (382 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.78%, a 4% decrease compared with the previous week (1.85%).

The rate of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness is 16.85%, a 1% decrease compared with the previous week (17.09%).

Summary:Week 9 (February 27– March 5, 2011)
Influenza activity in Taiwan peaked at week 4 and the rate of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness decreased gradually. Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus is predominant in community. Most of the influenza viruses match the 2010–11 vaccine component.

28% were positive for influenza: 21% pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses 6% influenza B viruses, 1% A (H3N2) viruses and <1% influenza virus untyped A.

There were 27 new complicated influenza infections during week 9, including 23 complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 2 seasonal H3N2 cases, and 2 seasonal influenza A untyped cases. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 1,719 reports of complicated influenza infections, including 1,024 reports of complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infections (one patient was co-infected with pandemic [H1N1] 2009 virus and seasonal influenza virus type H3N2). Since July 1, 2010, there have been 107 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 73 from the pandemic H1N1 2009, 30 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 2 from the seasonal influenza B strain and 2 from seasonal influenza A untyped strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 8 was 375, which was below the average number during the past 3 weeks (385 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.73%, a 3% decrease compared with the previous week (1.78%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 16.83%. Because of the national holidays in week 9, the rate is comparable with the previous week (16.85%). Excluding the national holidays, the rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 15.51%, a 5.5% decrease compared with the same period in previous week (16.42%).

Since July 1, 2010, 363 pandemic (H1N1) 2009, 266 influenza A (H3N2), and 12 influenza B viruses have been tested for resistance to the neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir). 3 pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses which were resistant to oseltamivir were detected in week 9.

Of the 617 specimens tested during week 8–week 10, 146 (24%) were positive for influenza
viruses, 90 (15%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses, 50 (8%)were positive
for influenza B viruses, 6 (1%) were positive for influenza A (H3N2) viruses.

There were 14 new complicated influenza infections during week 10, including 9 complicated
pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 2 seasonal H3N2 cases, and 3 seasonal influenza B
cases. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 1,727 reports of complicated influenza infection,
including 1,029 reports of complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infections (one patient
was co-infected with pandemic [H1N1] 2009 virus and seasonal influenza virus type H3N2).
Since July 1, 2010, there have been 121 reports of death from complicated influenza infection;
86 from the pandemic H1N1 2009, 30 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 2 from the seasonal
influenza B strain and 3 from seasonal influenza A untyped strain, respectively.


The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 9 was 350, which was
below the average number during the past 3 weeks (379 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.65%, a 4.6% decrease compared with
the previous week (1.73%).

The rate of emergency room visits for ILI is 16.29%, a 3.2% decrease compared with the
previous week (16.83%).

Of the 493 specimens tested during week 9?week 11, 108 (22%) were positive for influenza viruses, 55 (11%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses, 50(10%)were positive for influenza B viruses, 3 (1%) were positive for influenza A (H3N2) viruses.

There were 7 new complicated influenza infections during week 11, including 4 complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 1 seasonal H3N2 case, and 2 seasonal influenza B cases. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 1,734 reports of complicated influenza infection, including 1,033 reports of complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infections. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 124 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 89 from the pandemic H1N1 2009, 30 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 2 from the seasonal influenza B strain and 3 from seasonal influenza A untyped strain, respectively.

The number of deaths related to pneumonia and influenza during week 10 was 338, which was below the average number during the past 3 weeks (380 deaths).

The rate of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness is 1.59%, a 3.6% decrease compared with the previous week (1.65%).

Of the 445 specimens tested during week 10?week 12, 66 (15%) were positive for influenza viruses, 48 (11%) were positive for influenza B viruses, 15 (3%) were positive for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses, 3 (1%) were positive for influenza A untyped strain.

There were 8 new complicated influenza infections during week 12, including 2 complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza cases, 1 seasonal H3N2 case, and 5 seasonal influenza B cases. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 1,742 reports of complicated influenza infection, including 1,035 reports of complicated pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infections. Since July 1, 2010, there have been 127 reports of death from complicated influenza infection; 92 from the pandemic H1N1 2009, 30 from the seasonal H3N2 strain, 2 from the seasonal influenza B strain and 3 from seasonal influenza A untyped strain, respectively.

Enterovirus:The overall ER consultation rate for enterovirus infection continued to decrease, and it is lower than the epidemic threshold. Although coxsackie A is still the dominant enterovirus strain currently circulating in the community according to the respiratory virus surveillance data, detections of mild cases of enterovirus 71 and cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported.

Dengue Fever:Most of the indigenous cases of dengue fever that were confirmed this summer live in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City, and the epidemic had slightly slowed down during the past three weeks.

Polio International Outbreak:The Beijing Municipal Health Bureau in China announced that China CDC had identified three samples of Wild Poliovirus Type 1(WPV1)in three students from Hotan Region in Xinjiang who are currently enrolled in schools in Beijing City. According to the Chinese authority, the cases are asymptomatic. In August, a WPV1 polio outbreak occurred in Xinjiang, which resulted in a total of ten cases and one death. This epidemic was recognized by WHO as a cross-border polio spread from Pakistan to China.
