TAIPEI (Taiwan News) ? The latest victim of the H1N1 virus is the father of a man who died of the same flu last month, the Centers for Disease Control announced Tuesday.

Taiwan?s 47th victim of the disease was a 56-year-old man from Tainan City who died last Sunday, Father?s Day, while his son died of H1N1 last month at the age of 24, the CDC said.

The latest victim was first diagnosed with the virus in July but looked like he was gradually recovering by the end of the month, said CDC Vice Director-General Chou Chih-hau. However, his lungs deteriorated earlier this month, and he died on August 8, Chou said. The CDC official said the sudden worsening of his condition before his death might be linked to recent heart surgery which resulted in a weakening of his heart and lungs.

The son was infected with the virus around July 11 and died July 19, Chou said, added he had not been vaccinated against H1N1.

The CDC counseled members of the public to seek vaccination as the best way to improve their defense against the flu virus.

While most of Taiwan?s H1N1 fatalities fell last year, there have been several cases over the past month, despite the hot weather.
