And on Page 8, out of 62 NSW flu tests during this reporting period, 0 were positive for Influenza A or B, hence the certainty that it's not H1N1.
I have no idea if the cause is known or unknown to the authorities.

RoRo: Both Prof Fulde and the NSW surveillence agree that it's not influenza, but neither identify the specific pathogen.

Why do you think that is, if it's been going on for weeks or months? If it was Papua New Guinea, maybe that wouldn't seem odd. But Australia is a modern country. Surely they have Dx labs.

My guess is that they don't particularly care. Globally, we don't usually identify or even try to identify most seasonal illness. It doesn't really make much of a difference in treatment which virus is causing the illness. Unless something specific unusual is expected, all most countries test for is flu. If it's not flu, we usually don't care, unless the outcomes are unusually severe.

Also note in that report that the TOTAL number of ILI hospital admissions in NSW for February 2009 is reported as four (and two of them might be the two specific cases earlier in this thread, which seem unrelated to this "virus"). So this "virus" doesn't seem all that severe.

I don't terribly like the title of this thread - no "virus" has been identified, and the problem doesn't seem to be in a particular hospital. I would call this something like "Sydney - Increase in out of season respiratory illness".

I changed the thread title. I have also sent an e-mail to Prof. Fulde asking that he elaborate on the identity of the pathogen if possible.

Australian flu season starts in May.

50 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Oz this year already [meaning calendar year, I suppose].

If you apply the US CDC multiplier to get estimated total cases from confirmed, 50 confirmed is not exactly insignificant.

Apparently, Dr. Fulde publishes such a column regularly, since this article below came out on the 28th. No mention of ARI. Instead, he is dealing with heart attacks, car accidents, alcohol-related incidents, and other injuries. So whatever was causing the unseasonal ARI has likely passed, or wasn't nearly the issue we made of it.

suggests it was a rhinovirus outbreak. The most recent NSW report does not include a separate respiratory disease section this time, so I guess it all blew over.
