The HUG observe an outbreak of cases of scabies

The number of patients affected by the parasite has tripled at the start of the year compared to 2021 and 2022.

Since January, the HUG have treated 51 patients with scabies. This figure is three times higher than that observed over the same period in 2021 and 2022, reports the “ Tribune de Genève ”. Similar situations were observed in October 2019 and January 2017. Scabies, which causes severe itching, is caused by a parasite that lays its eggs under the skin. Promiscuity is the first factor of contagion. The disease is transmitted by indirect contact with the clothes or sheets of a patient, or by direct contact, but the latter must be prolonged.

Cases of scabies discovered in the Biel region

After Geneva, it is the Bienne region which records cases of scabies. If this disease has bad press, it is easily treated.

by Jean-Bernard Mani

The Delc clinic in Biel, specializing in dermatology, estimates that it receives five patients with scabies per week, reports the "Journal du Jura". For its part, the Biel Hospital Center (CHB) recorded only one this year. “Since last year, there has nevertheless been a slight increase”, assesses Cristel Ruini, deputy head doctor in dermatology at the Biel clinic. One of the reasons for this boom is that diagnostic methods have improved. In Geneva, an outbreak of scabies was recorded between 2021 and 2022.

Once diagnosed, the disease is easily treated, as long as the care protocol is followed to the letter. To the antiparasitic ointment is added a tablet of Ivermectin, twice in two weeks. “At the same time, all linens and clothes should be washed at 60 degrees. Anything that cannot stand such heat will be quarantined for at least five days. There is also a spray for sofas and carpets,” explains Cristel Ruini.
