Lake Constance - Preventative measures against avian influenza

Bern, 10.11.2016 - H5N8 avian influenza virus has been detected in dead wild birds at Lake Constance. The Federal Office of Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (FSO) has ordered the delimitation of control zones and observation areas, which should prevent the spread of the virus to domestic poultry. There is no evidence that this virus is transmissible to humans.

The avian influenza virus of subtype H5N8 caused the death of a large number of wild birds, mainly tufts. Switzerland, Germany and Austria have close contacts and co-ordinate their measures.

A control zone with a width of one kilometer was delimited around Lake Constance. Contacts between wild birds and domestic poultry should be avoided as much as possible. Outdoor detention of poultry, swimmers and runners is subject to restrictive measures. If these restrictions can not be applied, the animals must be kept in closed and covered facilities. In addition, operators with more than one hundred gallinces must record animals with special abnormalities and symptoms.

For the moment, no case on the shores of other Swiss lakes

No cases of dead birds infected with avian influenza have been reported for the time being on the shores of other Swiss lakes or rivers. However, as the wild bird population moves throughout the territory, three-kilometer-wide observation areas have been delineated preventively around or along the following waters: Lake Constance, Lake Biel, canal The Broye, Lake Geneva, Lake Murten, Lake Neuch?tel, Lake Lucerne, Lake Thielle and Lake Zurich. In these areas, increased vigilance for poultry infestations is required.

There is no indication at present that Swiss poultry farms are infected with avian influenza. There is also no evidence that the H5N8 subtype can be transmitted from animals to humans. Persons who find dead birds are asked not to touch them or to inform the nearest police station or gamekeeper.
