Current situation and assessment

The first reported case of monkeypox occurred in Switzerland on 19 May 2022. We started monitoring monkeypox cases on 21 May. Initially, cases were reported as exceptional findings. Monkeypox has been subject to mandatory reporting since 20 July.

Until now, we have published all monkeypox cases confirmed in Swiss laboratories. Since 17 August 2022, we only publish confirmed cases of people with a residential address in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein.

On 23 July 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a ‘public health emergency of international concern’. We continue to see a moderate threat to the population, although monkeypox infections are also increasing slightly in Switzerland. The population group currently most affected is men who have sex with men (MSM). The Swiss AIDS Federation (Aids-Hilfe Schweiz) regularly informs and raises awareness among this community on our behalf. An expansion of the outbreak to other population groups has not occurred to date, but cannot be ruled out.


For this reason, we continue to call on all healthcare actors as well as the people affected and their contacts for support to enable infected people to be identified early on so that the epidemic can be contained and controlled.
