Short message from the Health, Social and Integration Directorate:

Monkeypox case among staff in a day care center in the canton of Bern

A person from the staff of a daycare center in the canton of Bern has tested positive for monkeypox. There were eight children and two adults in the daycare group affected. The parents of the eight children were informed by the daycare management and will be called again tomorrow, Wednesday, by the cantonal medical service of the canton of Bern (KAD) to clarify medical and other questions. The risk of transmission is estimated to be extremely low. The situation was discussed with the Federal Office of Public Health. KAD acts in accordance with international guidelines. The children can all continue to attend daycare.

Current situation and assessment

The first reported case of monkeypox occurred in Switzerland on 19 May 2022. We started monitoring monkeypox cases on 21 May. Initially, cases were reported as exceptional findings. Monkeypox has been subject to mandatory reporting since 20 July.

Until now, we have published all monkeypox cases confirmed in Swiss laboratories. Since 17 August 2022, we only publish confirmed cases of people with a residential address in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein.

On 23 July 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a ‘public health emergency of international concern’. We continue to see a moderate threat to the population, although monkeypox infections are also increasing slightly in Switzerland. The population group currently most affected is men who have sex with men (MSM). The Swiss AIDS Federation (Aids-Hilfe Schweiz) regularly informs and raises awareness among this community on our behalf. An expansion of the outbreak to other population groups has not occurred to date, but cannot be ruled out.

For this reason, we continue to call on all healthcare actors as well as the people affected and their contacts for support to enable infected people to be identified early on so that the epidemic can be contained and controlled.

Monkeypox jumps to over 500 cases

This content was published on September 19, 2022 - 15:07September 19, 2022 - 3:07 pm
(Keystone-ATS)

Monkeypox cases in Switzerland and Liechtenstein crossed the 500 mark on Monday. The Federal Office of Public Health has so far recorded 502 cases since the first notifiable infection.

Since peaking in the last week of July, reported cases have been declining. Last week, the canton of Basel-City recorded the highest incidence with 14.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Zurich (12.7) and Geneva (9.7), as shown by a FOPH graph.

By far the most affected population group is that of men who have sex with men. The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that monkeypox infections are on the decline worldwide, as indicated by the FOPH in its assessment of the situation.

The cause of this decline is not yet definitively explained and it remains to be seen whether the trend will continue. Transmission occurs through close human-to-human physical contact. Transmission to other animal species is possible, but has not yet been observed in Switzerland.

The Confederation acquires vaccines

The Confederation will acquire vaccines and medicines against monkey pox. The Finance Delegation of the Federal Chambers has approved an urgent additional credit of 8.65 million francs for this purpose. Parliament will vote on this additional appropriation during the winter session.

Centralized purchasing is necessary because the manufacturers only supply the States. The Confederation wants to acquire 40,000 doses in a targeted manner to combat the spread of the disease. At the same time, the army wants to acquire 60,000 doses of vaccine as a reserve that can also be used in the event of the appearance of other smallpox viruses.

The first reported case of monkeypox was on May 19. According to the FOPH, monitoring of the disease began on May 21. Since mid-August, the office has only published laboratory-confirmed cases of people residing in Switzerland or in the principality.

Monkeypox vaccine available Tuesday

Geneva, Vaud, Zurich and Basel will receive 4,000 doses of the antidote this Friday. Vaccinations will begin next week.

The monkeypox vaccine has arrived in Switzerland. This Friday, the army pharmacy will deliver 4,000 doses to the four most affected cantons: Geneva, Vaud, Zurich and Basel. Since the start of the epidemic, which began in May, some 80,000 people have been infected worldwide, including 546 in Switzerland (76 in Geneva).

In the cantons of Geneva and Vaud, vaccination will begin on Tuesday 15 November. It is recommended for men with multiple partners who have sex with men, medical personnel at risk of being exposed to the virus and people who have had risky contact with patients.

Eligibility criteria

For now, 550 Genevans have already registered. They will be contacted by SMS according to the principle “first registered, first vaccinated”. As for the Vaudois, registrations open this Wednesday. “Only 920 doses having been received, the eligibility criteria will be strictly applied. Other doses will be delivered soon. Eligible people who have not been able to benefit from this first phase will be able to register for the following ones”, specify the Vaudois authorities.

The Canton of Geneva also adds that the vaccine interrupts the chains of transmission, reduces the severity of the disease and protects vulnerable people, but is not 100% effective. Therefore, “it is necessary to continue to be careful”. Generally, patients recover spontaneously and their symptoms are mild to moderate. “But some people felt very strong pain and had to be hospitalized. Monkeypox is therefore not a disease to be taken lightly.”
