The number of infected people in Switzerland increases to 14,336

According to the BAG, 257 people died in connection with Covid 19 disease.

The figures are based on the information that laboratories and doctors have submitted to the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) within the scope of the reporting obligation by Sunday morning. Therefore, the data in this report may differ from the number of cases communicated in the cantons, the BAG wrote.

The number of tests carried out on Covid-19 has so far totaled around 111,000 according to the announcement. Of these, the result was positive in 13 percent of those tested.

  • As of March 30, 15,557 people have tested positive and 330 people have died, according to an aggregate of cantonal statistics. It will take at least a week for the rate of infections to ease, health officials warned on March 21.
  • By March 30, some CHF6.6 billion in emergency loans (out of an available fund of CHF20 billion) had been agreed with around 32,000 companies. Nearly 16% of the workforce is on shortened hours.
  • The government has issued a recommendation to all citizens to stay at home, especially the sick and the elderly. It has announced a countrywide ban on gatherings of more than five people and more measures to help support the economy.
  • Cantons can close manufacturing plants to cease operation if they follow criteria set down by the federal authorities.
  • An “extraordinary situation” has been declared, resulting in a ban on all private and public events and closing bars, restaurants, sports and cultural spaces; only businesses providing essential goods remain open. Schools are closed nationwide. The measures are in force until April 19.

Switzerland coronavirus deaths top 500 as cases soar past 20,000

The health ministry said 20,201 people in Switzerland had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Saturday morning -- nearly 1,000 more than a day earlier.

The small Alpine country of some 8.5 million people is thus one of the worst hit compared to population size, now counting 236 registered infections per 100,000 people.

At the same time, an additional 76 people died over the past 24 hours, bringing Switzerland's death toll in the pandemic to 540, the health ministry said.

"We have not yet reached the peak," health ministry official Daniel Koch told reporters.

Worldwide, well over 1.1 million cases have been registered across 188 countries, while close to 60,000 people have died, according to a tally compiled by AFP Saturday from official sources.

The high incidence in Switzerland could in part be linked to the fact that it is among the countries that have administered most tests per capita.
