Swine Flu Spreading in Maine - 6/8/09 4:00 PM EST
Swine flu is spreading in Maine, with 29 cases identified as of yesterday, according to state health officials. In its latest update, the Maine Center for Disease Control says three new cases of the H1N1 virus were confirmed in Cumberland County over the weekend. Two of those cases turned up at the Cumberland County Jail, bringing the number of confirmed cases at the jail to four. One of the infected inmates has been released from the jail, but he appears to have recovered from the illness, authorities say.
The swine flu outbreak has prompted jail officials to establish an influenza unit, and to treat all sick inmates with Tamiflu, which is also being provided to inmates and staff who work in the C-3 unit where the virus has turned up. That unit is now closed to visitors and admissions.
The Maine CDC says 16 cases have now been identified in Cumberland County, 7 in York County and 1 in Penobscot County. In addition, five out-of-state visitors have been identified with confirmed or probable cases of the disease.
