Swine Flu Shot: Vaccine and Colleges, Schools Prepare for H1N1 Virus

Get your hand sanitizer and cover your cough. The Swine flu is back in colleges and primary and High Schools across the country and coughing, sneezing and feverish students are on campus. Preparation is being touted as the key, along with common sense measures. One strategy is frequent hand washing. MSNBC has an adorable if not alarming photo of would-be kindergartners given hand sanitizer before going to lunch in Rockville, Md. The kids are involved in a summer program, but that's what can be expected as officials are preparing for the worst.

More updates...This one from an ABC News report that is a bit scary, "The World Health Organization warned Friday that doctors around the world are now reporting a severe form of swine flu that goes straight to the lungs of otherwise healthy young people!" There are critics, they say this is nothing new and does more harm than good by frightening people.

For Arizona..."Seasonal flu shot clinics begin this week around the Valley. Visitor restrictions start Wednesday in some hospitals," the East Valley Tribune reports.

One more alarming number for parents. According to the Wall Street Journal "Kids between 5 and 14 were 14 times more likely than the those over 60 to come down with the H1N1 pandemic flu."

From the Tribune, using the Maricopa County (AZ) Department of Public Health as a source...

Some, especially children, may also have stomach problems and diarrhea.

Cough can last two or more weeks.

H1N1 influenza symptoms

Similar to that of seasonal flu: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Also like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death have occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.
