A YOUNG holidaymaker struck down with swine flu on a Spanish island has been flown back to Scotland after nearly three months in an Ibiza hospital.
Law graduate Lindy Paterson, 26, arrived back home by air ambulance at the end of last week and was admitted to the intensive care unit of Edinburgh?s Royal Infirmary.
Her parents, Celine, 49, and William flew back to Scotland hours later after a 78-day vigil on the island of Ibiza.
Lindy caught pneumonia and suffered a collapsed lung in a series of complications caused by swine flu, which delayed her return to Scotland.
She also had to undergo a tracheotomy at the private clinic in Ibiza where she was admitted on September 6.
Her mother confirmed yesterday: ?Lindy is in intensive care in Edinburgh. She?s conscious, but she?s quite sleepy and her muscles are very weak because her body has been inactive for so long.
?She can?t speak yet because of the tracheotomy and she can?t write anything down on a piece of paper, but she?s awake and doing quite well considering all she?s been through.
?Lindy?s due to have a scan to look at everything that?s been done in the hospital in Ibiza and the effect that has had on her body.
?She has a long way to go yet, and we?re still unclear just how much damage both the swine flu and the pneumonia have done.
?But the doctors have told us she?s young and fit and once she starts to climb, she?s going to climb very fast.?
Mrs Paterson added: ?We?re obviously delighted to have Lindy home. The three months have seemed more like three years at times. I thought when we first flew out to Spain that she?d be out of hospital in a couple of weeks and we?d be walking round the streets of Ibiza together.
?It breaks my heart sometimes to see her the way she is in *hospital, but I know that she?s in good hands.?
The couple flew out to Ibiza shortly after the law graduate was admitted to hospital on the island in September.
Lindy, who works for Lloyds Banking Group in Edinburgh, battled back from the brink of death after falling very ill with swine flu just days into a fortnight?s break in Ibiza with a group of friends.
An earlier attempt to fly Lindy back home last month had to be aborted shortly after take-off when she suffered a second suspected lung collapse in mid-air.
Super-fit Lindy had no underlying health problems.
Her friend Emma Ansell, who was on holiday in Ibiza with Lindy, has told how the pair planned to go para-sailing and trek up a mountain before she fell ill.
