Swine flu reports up in McLennan County, though strain appears weaker
By Wendy Gragg Tribune-Herald staff writer

Tuesday, September 01, 2009

The frequency of swine flu cases in McLennan County has picked up, but the weakened strain appears to have kept those cases manageable.

Kelly Craine, public information officer for the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District, said Monday that the cases are being reported at a slow and steady pace.

Last week, 15 cases were reported in the county; 17 were reported the week before.

Lab confirmation no longer is needed to determine that a patient has the H1N1 virus, Craine said. Doctors can diagnose and report cases to the district themselves.

?It?s acting like a mild seasonal flu. If you?re healthy, you can make an improvement in three to five days,? Craine said.

Rumors flew Monday that the H1N1 virus had sent some 30 kids home from West Middle School. Flulike symptoms at West Independent School District campuses caused a number of students to be sent home, especially at the middle school, but none of those cases has been confirmed as swine flu, said assistant superintendent Jan Hungate.

Craine said swine flu vaccines are currently in trials and may be shipped to Waco by mid-October.
