Swine flu on the rise in Russia's Far East
KHABAROVSK, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Khabarovsk Territory in Russia's Far East has had 35 new human cases of swine flu infection confirmed in the past week, bringing the total up to 56 since May, a local health official said.
"From May up to today, 56 cases of A/H1N1 infection have been confirmed through lab tests. Of the infected, 49 are children, and most of them have already recovered," said Vladimir Ott, director of the regional department of consumer rights regulator Rospotrebnadzor.
The official said that none of the cases so far have been severe.
Russia's top sanitary official, Gennady Onishchenko, said on Monday that the number of people so far diagnosed with swine flu in Russia totals 927, up from 807 on October 15. No one has died in Russia of the virus.
Several schools have been temporarily closed over swine flu fears, including every school in Chita, the capital of the Transbaikal Region, where 17 new cases of the H1N1 virus were confirmed on Monday. The schools will remain closed for two weeks.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed an order on Monday allocating 4 billion rubles ($136 million) for the purchase of swine flu vaccines.
According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, close to 400,000 cases of swine flu have been confirmed throughout the world and over 4,700 people have died from the virus.
