A 48-YEAR-OLD man has become the first South Australian to die after being diagnosed with swine flu and to have had no existing underlying medical conditions.

An SA Health spokesman yesterday confirmed the man was not considered to be in the "vulnerable" group, which includes pregnant women, people with chronic lung disease, heart disease, immune suppression or diabtes, and people who are morbidly obese.

The man was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Friday, July 24, and died yesterday.

He is the eight South Australian to die after being diagnosed with the disease.

SA Health chief medical officer Professor Paddy Phillips said in the vast majority of people, human swine influenza is a mild illness.

"However, those in the vulnerable groups should seek medical attention if they develop acute respiratory symptoms."

There have been 3445 confirmed cases of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Influenza in SA and there are 47 patients in hospital, 11 of them in intensive care.

it was ineveitable that someone who was not in this group would die as a result of the diease and there was no need for the community to panic.
